Very very weird creepy experience at The Border.

The border crossing was empty. Usually there is a bunch of vehicles waiting patiently to be processed. NOT TODAY. The Windsor/Detroit border was empty. Every lane was open.

CBP was very polite & confiscated the orange from the basket of fruit that Holiday Inn gave us, and then we were waved through.

There were more bright, shiny new vehicles for CBP & ICE than were waiting to go across from Canada to the U.S. I have never seen anything like it!

About the UK… How does Boris Johnson fire elected officials? He removed the whip (and revoked their access access to enter Parliament). What are weekends for?

By “removing the whip,” he’s ejected them from the Conservative Party. While they’re not fired, they are cut off from any support from the party and if they choose to run for reelection they will either have to join another party or run as independents. It’s a bit more formal version of those Congresscritters here in the States who get cut off financially by their party when they cross the leadership one too many times. Sort of like what Steve King is going through right now.

I was wondering about this, also: does the PM have the authority to boot Party members on his own say-so, or does it have to be done by some other body (Committee?)

The job is that of the Chief Whip, who’s a member of the Cabinet. Basically they’re the equiv of the Majority Whip here in the States, though they have more power to fuck with one’s political career for disloyalty to the leadership, including removing the whip.

That last sentence was supposed to ask What are elections for (which autocorrected to weekends… Sure, why not? 🙄).

This doesn’t sound like they’ve just pulled support. They got sacked (which is fired, right?) And they revoked their access to get into Parliament. That’s not just pulling support, that’s making them functionally unable to vote.

Not sure where you heard this, but I was watching the BBC most of the day and they were pretty clear those MPs would still be there but would be sitting with other independents or even with the opposition.

No, the closest match to US congressional organization would be to lose their seniority for committee assignments, and party ranking.

They remain in Parliament but would be considered more an independent than a member of that party.

Between Johnson and Rees-Mogg today they just kind of gave away that their little team give no fucks about all the hoary decorum and conservative shit that nominally drives them. I mean, it was obvious to people who paid attention to words and deeds, but now its the people who cling to symbols and appearances have begun to notice. Approximately three minutes after the dead crab, but finally.

But, by god, they just can’t stint themselves a chance to posture and gloat.

It is their nature, like unto the scorpion on the frog in that one story except it’sjacking off instead of stinging.

From the Guardian:

Still scratching your head about what happened today? Or arriving at this blog from a non-UK timezone and need some catching up?

I’ve written a very basic explainer of what happened today, addressing questions like:

What just happened?
Boris Johnson has just lost a very significant vote in parliament, which has allowed MPs to seize control of the parliamentary timetable. It paves the way to introduce a bill that is designed to block a no-deal Brexit by forcing the prime minister to request an extension if he cannot strike a reworked divorce agreement with the rest of the EU.

Johnson threatened his MPs ahead of Tuesday that they should vote with him or face the penalty of having the “whip” withdrawn. Despite this threat, Johnson lost the vote. The rebel MPs and opposition parties won by 328 to 301.

What does it mean to ‘withdraw the whip’?
An arcane and slightly disturbing expression, in political-speak “withdrawing the whip” from someone effectively means booting them out of the party, without them immediately losing their seat.

An MP who has the whip withdrawn sits as an independent, but can be brought back into the party fold if it decides to restore the whip. Having the whip withdrawn is one of the most serious disciplinary actions that can be taken against an MP by a party. In this case it may mean they are barred from standing for the Tories in the next election.

What happens next?
Boris Johnson has announced he will ask parliament to allow a snap general election, which would be held on 15 October. The date of 14 October had been floated, but was deemed inappropriate as it is the Jewish holiday Sukkot.

Johnson has said that even if the rebels’ vote passes on Wednesday he will never request an extension beyond 31 October from the EU, and “the people of this country will have to choose” in an election. However, the prime minister needs a two-thirds majority to secure an early general election under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act. Which means Labour can block it - and Jeremy Corbyn quickly made clear his party would not vote for an election unless and until the anti-no-deal bill has passed.

There is talk that if things reach a stalemate, it could result in a motion of no confidence in Johnson, but the prospects of that remain unclear.

Every time I see a phone video of a concert where all you can really see is dozens of other people making phone videos, I wonder if anyone is actually watching the concert rather than just monitoring it through their cell phone screens. Seems to happen with almost anything worth watching now. Everyone wants the digital version to watch later rather than being in the moment. I rarely take pictures on scenic drives or walks anymore.

house module arriving
More house arriving
Being placed
And, as evening falls…

There is work to do on a central hall connecting two groups of modules, and a roof and siding, etc. All the electrical, plumbing, appliances, etc. are already in place.
It’s got to be twice the size of the old house. Why they need 3500 sq. ft. or so, I don’t know, but apparently the think they do.

The ginormous crane is still out there, totally blocking the street, but with luck they’ll get it out of there sometime tonight.

They have a foundation that will stand up to anything. It is probably wildly overengineered-and it goes to the underlying sandstone. The house will not be going anywhere. At least as long as they remember to bolt the modules to that foundation,.

50,000 unvaccinated children head to Wisconsin schools as the U.S. copes with worst measles outbreak in 27 years

When Wisconsin children return to school this week, close to 50,000 of them will have waivers that exempt them from vaccines, leaving them vulnerable to measles at a time when the nation has experienced its largest outbreak in 27 years.

Health officials across the U.S. have reported 1,215 cases of measles this year as of Aug. 22, the highest number since 1992, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Measles had been declared eliminated in 2000.

“I really do think it’s purely just dumb luck that this hasn’t spread to Wisconsin,” said James Conway, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Good morning, Lizards. In the ongoing Brexit saga,

They’re leaving BoJo to twist in the wind (for now) as basically a lame duck PM. I’m glad to see this, as the opposition is being smart; they’ll call an election on their terms, not the Tories.

As the Brits would say, it’s looking like the opposition has “played a blinder” - they’ve painted the Tories into a corner. And while all this happy horseshit isn’t over yet, things are starting to look a bit more promising.

We got back from Scottsbluff late.

I took US-26 through Bayard and Moomaw Corners rather than my usual route on NE-92 to look at the crop damage from the hailstorm.

Wholly crap, the hail leveled almost everything from here to Scottsbluff. Corn, sugar beets, beans, you name it. A whole bunch of farm buildings were severely damaged as well.

The cheque arrived for our car damage from the insurance company; they paid us $1,750.

I heard this on the radio today headed to town.

Cherokee Nation Names First Delegate To Congress (Goes to NPR)

The treaty which resulted in the “Trail of Tears” also has a clause that allows the Cherokee Nation to appoint a non-voting delegate to the US House of Representatives.

Until now they have never done so. Former Obama appointee Kimberly Teehee was appointed by the Cherokee Nation to the delegate position.

The treaty language is very clear that if the Cherokee Nation appoints a delegate, that delegate “shall be seated” in the US House.

As a delegate in Congress who can attend committee meetings, Teehee would have the opportunity to advocate not just for the Cherokee Nation, but for all tribes, said Lindsay Robertson, who teaches federal Indian law at the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

Congress has to figure out how to seat her, but with the Democrats in the majority she will be seated. Let’s see how many Republicans try to oppose it while insisting they aren’t racists.

When Elizabeth Warren Agreed With Betsy DeVos (Goes to the New York Times, incoming steaming pile of crap from David Brooks):

She has also done one more thing. She has made sure that her policy views conform to progressive orthodoxy. This is an important transformation for Warren. When she emerged on the public stage she was a completely heterodox thinker, who deviated from the liberal mainstream with abandon.

“Progressive orthodoxy?” What is this, a religion? Religious people and conservatives think in terms of “orthodoxy,” not progressives.

He goes on about her book “The Two-Income Trap” and completely misrepresents what she and her daughter argued in the book, to make it appear that Warren supported the things that DeVos does now about stay-at-home wives.

Hurricane Dorian is now 90 miles east of Daytona Beach. Winds are down to 105 mph.

By Sunday it is expected to be a post-tropical hurricane over Nova Scotia, and by Monday it will be a post-tropical storm after crossing Newfoundland and emerging into the Atlantic Ocean on the north side of the island.

In the meantime, Hurricane Warnings have been extended to Duck, North Carolina, and watches to the NC-VA border. A Tropical Storm Watch is in place for Hampton Roads and the lower Chesapeake Bay. The storm is expected to come very near or over coastal South and North Carolina Thursday and Friday, so keep your heads down if you live there. If the storm comes ashore there, the forward motion will be so fast on the southeast side it could add a whole category to the winds.

Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet ordered all U.S. Navy ships and aircraft in the Hampton Roads area to be prepared to transit to safety within 24 hours, if necessary, as a precautionary measure due to the approach of Hurricane Dorian, thereby setting Sortie Condition Bravo.

Vice Adm. Andrew L. Lewis set the sortie condition as a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of significant damage to ships, aircraft and piers during potential high winds and/or seas.

“We will continue to monitor and track the storm to ensure our ships and personnel are prepared,” said Lewis. “If necessary, we will sortie our ships to allow enough time to transit safely out of the path of the storm.”

Some ships will not get underway due to various maintenance availabilities and are taking extra precautions to avoid potential damage. Commanding officers have a number of options when staying in port, depending on the severity of the weather. Some of these options include: adding additional mooring and storm lines, dropping the anchor and disconnecting shore power cables.

Additionally, Rear Adm. Charles W. Rock, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic (CNRMA), ordered all installations in the Hampton Roads area to prepare for possible sustained destructive winds of greater than 50 knots within 48 hours, thereby setting Tropical Cyclone Conditions of Readiness (TCCOR) Three (III).

Jim Mattis was interviewed on MJ this morning.
That was an inspiration of leadership that I wasn’t expecting.
Take the time to look at it if you get the chance.

He also weaseled out yesterday when Christine Amanpour interviewed him.

cnn.com

Former Secretary of Defense James Mattis defended his reluctance to openly criticize the Trump administration Tuesday but also did not rule out speaking candidly before the 2020 election, telling CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that “there will come a time when it is right” for him to do so.

In his first CNN interview since resigning eight months ago, Mattis suggested that he continues to weigh a responsibility to speak out with a duty of silence he believes he owes current officials as they navigate a myriad of geopolitical challenges, raging from Iran to Syria to North Korea.

For the moment, Mattis said that he does not think he adds anything by “representing contrary views” but made it very clear that “there will come a time when it’s right for me to talk about strategy and policy” and that he will know that moment when he sees it.

Pressed on whether that time might come before the 2020 election, Mattis was non-committal.

“You’re a military man. Duty and honor are very important in your life and in your career. Do you believe it’s your duty to speak about what you know from the inside before the next election?” Amanpour asked.

“Duty and honor absolutely are important. And you don’t surrender your oath to support and defend the constitution when you leave active duty. But that said, I don’t think now, for a person steeped in the military tradition, in the Defense Department, that I should be speaking up on things that are political assessments,” Mattis responded.

Mattis echoed that sentiment later Tuesday while speaking before the Council of Foreign Relations.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Dorian continues stalking the coast of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina like Trump stalked women at a beauty pageant He’d hit that because he could, and then claimed no one else could do what he did.

So what insanity will Trump bring today? The usual assortment of lies, misinformation, and scandal. We can’t be numb to this - because that’s what the daily deluge is intended to do. He overwhelms the senses with scandal, where had each of these occurred under any prior administration, we’d have already proceeded to impeachment and removal for being unfit for office. Just the actions of the past 72 hours is enough for impeachable offenses.

No one else runs a WH like a kakistocracy and kleptocracy where every decision and utterance is about self enrichment and profiting from the position while deflecting and dodging responsibility when things go south.

Well, well: to what should be absolutely no one’s surprise (as the classicists say, cui bono?) - Bloomberg highlights one of the lesser-publicized aspects of the Brexit fiasco. Their headline says it all:

U.K.’s Super-Rich Prepare to Flee From Corbyn Rule, Not Brexit

Kind of the usual hack piece - complete with quote from Margaret Thatcher - but at least it foresees Brexit as providing a chance for the revival of a certain special character long-famous in British lore: the “tax exile”…

ADD: DJIA actually opened up about 200 points this morning - supposedly on the “good news” from Hong Kong (and London [??])

And now we’re beginning to see the sort of squabble develop in the opposition ranks that are why Brexit has continued to limp along for ages. There’s a disagreement starting to set in on just when Labour will back snap elections, with their line last night being that they wouldn’t allow it before the “Benn bill” was law, but now others in the opposition are wanting Corbyn to commit to preventing a vote earlier than Oct 19th, which is the deadline for Boris seeking an extension from the EU.

This is the sort of crack that Tories have been successful as squeezing wedges into, in this case it would be continuing to needle Corbyn until he commits to elections prior to Oct 19th, giving Boris the opportunity (if he wins) to junk the “Benn bill” and push forward with no-deal Brexit.

…seems like Trump is getting sloppier and sloppier about lying, about conflicts of interest, and about bad optics…. and at least a dozen other impolitic moves in the last month or two that we likely would not have seen two years ago (even though the administration has always operated under relatively low standards for such things). Maybe Trump has gotten complacent, since he’s gotten away with so much for so long. Or maybe he’s tired, or is otherwise in decline, and is investing even less effort in playing politics. Or maybe life in the bubble has left him further disconnected from reality than he already was

It doesn’t mean the GOP will lose every one of the seats here, but it’s a warning that the GOP is likely to see a massive drubbing.

654 came down with measles as part of this outbreak in NYC.
8% of those who got the measles in NYC needed hospitalization (52).
Of those who required hospitalization, 16 needed admission to the ICU - 30.7%.
Overall, 2.4% of those who got the measles were admitted to the ICU due to complications/severity of the case.

That’s the cost of not getting vaccinated.

Thankfully, the communities hardest hit responded to the crisis by pushing the vaccination rates from 88% before the outbreak to now nearly 99 percent in Borough Park and from 67 percent to 95% in Williamsburg.

Herd immunity requires at least 90-95% vaccination rates. So, keeping the rates where they are or improving on them further is the ongoing goal moving forward.

They see themselves as staying in the minority in the House for the foreseeable future, so they don’t get to set the agenda. They seek greener pastures, like the grifter circuit, lobbying, etc.

Democrats should pick up additional seats as a result.

But it’s still down to the Senate and WH. Democrats need to take back the Senate to completely bring the GOP regressive agenda to a standstill. Taking the WH and the Senate would mean beginning the process of undoing the damage the GOP has done for the past 4 years (6 by time 2021 comes around).

Also, about the guy who killed him: “Routh was a 25-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Lancaster, Texas. Kyle and Littlefield had reportedly taken Routh to the gun range in an effort to help him with his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Routh had been in and out of mental hospitals for at least two years and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. His family also said he suffered from PTSD from his time in the military. On the way to the shooting range, Kyle texted Littlefield, “This dude is straight up nuts.” Littlefield responded, “Watch my six,” military slang meaning “watch my back.”

And despite these concerns, Kyle STILL gave the dude his guns.

There was an incident a few years ago where a gun range that allowed anyone to go in and shoot any manner of guns that they had on hand - they rented a goddamned Uzi of some sort to a young girl - who proceeded to fire the gun and lost control - killing the instructor in the process.

But on Monday, one family’s adventure went horribly wrong. A 9-year-old girl from New Jersey accidentally shot and killed her instructor with an Uzi submachine gun while he stood to her left side, trying to guide her. A video of the shooting, which her parents recorded on a cellphone, suggests that the girl, in pink shorts and with a braided ponytail, was unable to control the gun’s recoil; the instructor, Charles Vacca, 39, was rushed to a hospital in Las Vegas, where he died Monday night.

The parents turned over the cellphone video to the sheriff’s department, which released it publicly. As they spread online and on television, the images of a small girl losing control of a powerful war weapon during a family vacation created a worldwide spectacle, prompting some commentators to castigate parents who would put a submachine gun in the hands of a child.

“What in the name of Jesus is wrong with us, Americans?” one person wrote on the TripAdvisor page for Bullets and Burgers, the tour company that brings people to Last Stop, amid other reviewers who raved about the great time they had firing guns there. “Automatic weapons as toys? And now a man is dead, for no reason, and a 9-year-old girl is scarred for life.”

The parents are to be blamed to be sure, but the gun range too - they never should have put that kind of weapon in the hands of a 9-year old. No one of any age outside the military should be using that kind of weapon. Even accidents can have deadly consequences.

I remember better times when the white working class was thriving with well paid unionized factory jobs.

They were already racist assholes.

The economic decline just made it a lot more blatant.

My personal opinion is that their racism was what allowed the rich to rig the economy against them. When you say “blacks shouldn’t have access to higher education” or “blacks shouldn’t be in my union” you allow those higher up to make it harder on you as well.

I have no idea but this exactly is why I think gun culture is toxic. A video game I get but actually shooting a weapon? Obviously I feel bad for Kyle’s family but he was extremely reckless and yes stupid by giving the guy a gun.

They make you feel privileged with what they let you have, remember the LBJ quote, as long as people have someone else to look down on, they will let you treat them like dirt…Same thing the English did with the Ulstermen and the Irish Catholics.

There was an incident a few years ago where a gun range that allowed anyone to go in and shoot any manner of guns that they had on hand - they rented a goddamned Uzi of some sort to a young girl - who proceeded to fire the gun and lost control - killing the instructor in the process.

Said it here when it happened but the instructor and the girls guardians were asking for trouble and now that girl is traumatized knowing she ended a life. People look at me like I’m nuts when I declare my dislike of guns and gun culture but stories like that are exactly why I want the NRA to die.

The Right to Bear Arms is absolute and has noting to do with any sort of well regulated militia.

to the comment (not at you)

we as a society, and through legislation and the courts decided long ago that the RKBA is not absolute and some people should not possess/own weapons/guns:
- the mentally ill - whatever the definition
- certain criminals/felons, etc
- domestic abusers
- ‘terrorists’
- minors

if every transfer is not reasonably vetted, how are you keeping guns away from these people?

I recall that it was US military policy that service members with a history of domestic abuse were not allowed to carry sidearms.

Which amazed me: they could drive tanks, pilot attack helicopters or launch rocket batteries but could not carry a pistol…

Isn’t that how Chris Kyle was killed? With his own weapon, by a friend he was letting use it?

Sort of. He allowed someone to to use it as part of an pretense at therapy for a guy who had PTSD _and_ schizophrenia. He went into a psychotic break with reality on the drive to the range and killed both of the other guys who didn’t take his issues seriously enough.

But in the end, that is your choice. Only at the range however and for the duration of the visit.

One example for why I would allow that is person A owns an expensive old shotgun. Say a Parker or a Fox. The stocks on those tended to be more extremely cut than on modern shotguns. Before dropping $5k or more on it, person B will probably want to see if that stock is usable for them. Thus go to a range together, shoot a round of clays. Then they can do the sale and background check (presumably on a smartphone app) and make the official transfer of the firearm. There is just an example.

That poor little girl didn’t know what the adults were getting her into. How would she know things could happen as they did. They just told her it was going to be fun.

I hope that her therapists have been able to get this through to the girl. She was an innocent in the hands of lethally stupid adults.

And I totally get where Jim is coming from (he’s written extensively about gun safety), and I concur. Accidents usually are the result of negligence on the part of the gun owner.

Self-inflicted injuries from not treating every gun as loaded with the safety off.
Discharges hitting someone else because not treating the gun as loaded with the safety off.
Ignoring what is downrange from the muzzle.
Improper storage.
Improper handling.

It all comes back to the negligent handling of the gun. And I also think prosecuting those who negligently handled their firearms that led to the death or injuries of others should be mandatory even if it’s a family member (and an “accident”).

But for the improper handling and storage of the guns, those people would not have been injured or killed by the discharge of a weapon that was negligently stored/maintained/handled by the owner.

Trump backs Boris Johnson amid setbacks: He ‘knows how to win’

“Boris knows how to win,” he added. “Don’t worry about him.”

Johnson faced a significant setback Tuesday when 21 members of his party joined with other members of parliament to force a vote to delay the U.K.’s withdrawal from the European Union.

On Wednesday, lawmakers in the House of Commons voted 329-300 to advance a bill that would block a “no deal” Brexit, handing Johnson his second defeat in as many days.
