If Erdogan is as modern as he says he is, he will allow for the protests. If he wasn’t such a corrupt twatwaffle, this wouldn’t have happened in the first place. He was essentially selling off a park to developers who helped him and his party.

People should not subordinate themselves to other nations. Norway had the right idea. They may be close allies with Turkey, but they also were doing broadcasts into the country detailing the protests. In essence, I believe we should be Scandinavian on this. Allies with nations, but quite willing to call them on bullshit. The US should try to be more like Scandinavia.

About the actual catalyst issue, I’m with the protestors. Like my father, the idea of turning a park into a shopping mall pisses me off. The fact that its part of a corrupt political bargain angers me even more*. I just worry about things getting out of hand, is all. It seems clear to me the project should be canceled, and the destroyed trees replaced.

*: I omit my customary calling of such a bargain “Chicago-style”, because such a removal of a park in favor of a shopping mall would not have been allowed in Chicago at any point in my lifetime.
