My mom’s dad entered the USA in 1896, and was naturalized by the 1940 census, if not earlier. Her mom died young, and probably never got her citizenship.
America’s borders were very porous until very recently. It doesn’t seem to have hurt us none.
I really think it’s because where the immigrants are coming from has changed. And conservatives scoff at the idea of white privilege.
