Irene just missed a direct hit on NYC that could have had devastating consequences. The storm surge fell just short of inundating dozens of subway tunnels and that would have shut down vast portions of the subway system (at a cost of billions of dollars). However, the system veered off to the East, meaning that the brunt of the storm was out over Long Island, where it still did significant damage.

The biggest problem is an ongoing one - flood damage in New Jersey and upstate NY, and VT, NH and MA. Many communities are still struggling with the consequences of the flood damage.

And yet, we got lucky here in the NYC metro area. It could have been even worse.
