Forrest was a vicious man, no two ways about it. He was like Joshim Peiper of the SS in World War II: A superior combat officer, who a man was a ruthless monster. But the ruthlessness of Forrest in the west finally found its equal in William Tecumseh Sherman, whose methods of total war broke the ability of Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina to continue the war.
