I think the tea parties are seen as isolated events - and not representations of Americans celebrating their patriotism.

Parades, family gatherings and the like are probably what media outlets consider genuine, not large gatherings of disgruntled Americans.

Couple that with the elements that a tea party attracts and you have a lose-lose situation.
