re: #136 Sir John Barron

That’s one thing the show has done, blur the lines somewhat between good and bad characters, over time, make formerly reviled characters somewhat sympathetic as they face different situations and other ambiguous characters. The Lannisters are a case in point. Even Little Finger.

Somebody said of GoT that the whole point is that it’s never telling the story you think it is. Fantasy literature generally has Good and Evil. Elves vs Orcs, Gandalf et al. vs Sauron, etc. You may have the occasional traitor. Good triumphs.

In GoT, at first you think it’s how brave, honorable Ned Stark saves the 7 Kingdoms from the evil Lannisters.

Then he gets his head cut off.

You think maybe it’s about how Danaerys and Khal Drogo cross the sea with 10,000 Dothraki and win back her throne.

Then he dies of an infection.

So then, you think it’s about how brave, honorable Rob Stark takes revenge on the Lannisters for killing Ned.

Then HE gets HIS head cut off.

So then, you think maybe it’s about how Tyrion saves King’s Landing and finally earns the respect he has always deserves.

Nope.

Eventually you just give up trying to figure it out, because he’ll just change it on you again.
