I think you’re leaving something fundamental out of your analysis. The wacky left didn’t throw huge rallies hosted by Dem leaders in Congress. Indeed, most Dem politicians stayed far away, aggressively distancing themselves from the fringe left groups you mention.

Today’s right-wing movement is very different. There’s now a Tea Party Caucus in the House. GOP leaders are everywhere in the TP movement. Palin, Bachmann, Tancredo, King, even Boehner and McConnell fall all over one another kissing up to the tea partiers. This isn’t just some fringe Code Pink outfit—the TP has gone from fringe to mainstream, and the GOP has embraced it.
