My father told my grandfather he wanted to join the Army to be a paratrooper when he was 17 or so. My grandfather asked him what would happen if the chute didn’t open. My dad said, “They’ll give you another one”. D’oh!!

My father became a paratrooper during the Korean War. The real reason he told me later was that he figured that by the time training was over, the war might be over. Anyway, he says he would have been safer in a foxhole. Just about everytime they had a large jump, somebody would go splat.
