This is a test. Take notes. This will count as 3/4 of your final grade. Hints: remember, in chess, kings cancel each other out and cannot occupy adjacent squares, are therefore all-powerful and totally powerless, cannot affect each other, produce stalemate. Hinduism is a polytheistic religion; the sect of Atman worships the divine spark of life within Man; in effect saying, “Thou art God.” Provisos of equal time are not served by one viewpoint having media access to two hundred million people in prime time while opposing viewpoints are provided with a soapbox on the corner. Not everyone tells the truth. Operational note: these sections may be taken out of numerical sequence: rearrange to suit yourself for optimum clarity. Turn over your test papers and begin.

Just for the heck of it I googled that shut up quote. Some guy Ring Lardner (who I never heard of) has a few gems:
“An optimist is a girl who mistakes a bulge for a curve.”
“He looked at me as if I were a side dish he hadn't ordered.”
"The family you come from isn't as important as the one you're going to have"
and
"'Are you lost, daddy' I asked tenderly. 'Shut up,' he explained."

Ring Lardner
was a sportswriter and humorist; his son, Ring Lardner Jr., was a screenwriter (M*A*S*H was one of the movies he wrote/doctored a script for), and was one of the "Hollywood Ten".

I've heard extremely mixed reviews, which I end up skipping over ftmp, because I've been trying to avoid any reviews until I see it. I was going to just wait until it comes out on DVD but might have to go see it since it seems unavoidable.

In a year marked by big weddings, there was another one over the weekend as Lauren Bush married David Lauren. The marriage is a union of political royalty (Lauren Bush is the daughter of Neil Bush and thus the granddaughter of a president (George H.W. Bush) and the niece of another president (George W. Bush) and a governor (Jeb Bush)), and fashion royalty (David Lauren is Ralph Lauren's son).

Back in the day, a buddy of mine used to patronize this strip club in our neighborhood frequently, so I went with him one night.

Now I talk a lot of shit here, but I'm not a big fan. Strip clubs have a way of awakening an appetite without bedding it down. Who needs that kind of frustration?

Anyway, one gal gets on stage and reaches back for a self-SMACK.

I turned, looked at my buddy and said "I'm getting the fuck out of here, 'cuz if she's gonna spank it (pointing at her), I'm gonna spank it (pointing at a part of my own anatomy), and nobody wants to see that".

I had a random paragraph scrambler fed the opening quote... and just added the punctuation to make it work... let's see how it comes out:

Adjacent Man: rearrange on test, will out papers.

As take-all-powerful is religion - Not polytheistic (million by totally.)
Hints: Provisos of

“Thou and clarity,
suit count (Operational out the corner),
yourself - truth.
The art!
Turn, worships, effect affect cannot,
are of note: 3/4 for a access.
Two over kings time,
This sections numerical viewpoint cannot,
other,
with cancel taken;
remember! "to the in ... "
in powerless, not your (these!)
And to sequence: This/are, in God.”

Atman be each, the optimum opposing produce, (your spark having equal notes) everyone (media, prime viewpoints, divine) within hundred therefore occupy of a saying, are chess. While of squares, Hinduism (test - a sect!), life, other is each final provided soapbox time.

People tells and, of served one, stalemate.

When I was a kid my uncle had a 36 foot cabin cruiser

In the spring, while in dry dock, he would scrape and paint the hull
Me, being the youngest (read,, smallest) family member it was my job to crawl under the lowest points on the hull to paint.

When he put the boat in the water it was immediately noticed that the sonar didn't work

Pulled the boat out of the water and someone (SHOCKA) had painted over it

HEY ,,,, give a 10 year old a bucket of paint and a brush, whattayaexpect !?!?!?!

Morning, all!

Maybe only tangentially related, but I went to see the soon-to-be 86-years-old B.B. King (and Lucille) this past Sunday up in Bangor.

If you've ever been to one of those nice amphitheaters with the pricey landscaping -- this wasn't that.

Every seat in the place was a folding chair, and if you were unfortunate enough to be seated at the far right of the expensive section, your concert experience was enhanced by the subtle aroma of the nearby row of port-a-potties. This place was small.

Mr. King is no longer agile, but the man still howls like a banshee.

I'd guess there were maybe 2,000+ in attendance; I don't think the promoters had to give out many refunds after Gregg Allman cancelled.

All four bands on the bill got to do at least one encore. It was really nice being part of such an appreciative audience.

Iowa Democrats Make Fun Internet Drinking Game Mocking Tea Party

[Link: guessthatteapartier.com...]

Here is a fun “we just made this into a drinking game” Internet website from the Iowa Democratic Party that asks visitors to read a hilariously krazy quote and guess which nutbag GOP personality said it. It’s slightly harder than it looks! We’ll share some tips after the jump!

First of all, we are professionals, and even some of the “God hates homos” and “science was invented by Hitler” ones are hard to assign correctly because they are repeated so often and nearly verbatim between these outlandish weirdos that it is easy to mix them up. Don’t feel bad if you miss one. Take a shot! Take a shot if you get it right, too! Everyone wins.

Sheesh... even Talk Points Memo used the Fox version of the Hoffa quote verbatim, no ellipses. From TPM DC:

Hoffa described the recent Republican-led assaults on collective bargaining rights as a "war on workers" and described Obama as union workers' general who will lead them to victory in 2012 over the Tea Party and like-minded allies.

"President Obama, this is your army," Hoffa said. "We are ready to march. Let's take these sons of bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong."

Actual quote with the part TPM dropped bolded:

"President Obama, this is your army. We are ready to march. And, President Obama we want one thing – jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs. That’s what we’re going to tell him. When he sees what we’re doing here he will be inspired. But he needs help. And, you know what. Everybody here’s gotta vote. If we go back and keep the eye on the prize, let’s take these son of a bitches out and give America back to America where we belong."

"Lets Take These Sons of Bitches Out"
By David Weigel
Posted Tuesday, Sep. 6, 2011, at 8:01 AM EDT

Talking about kicking your political enemy's ass is uncivil, but it's as old as politics. Can we skip this little drama where conservatives pretend that Hoffa was ordering goon squads into action to pull Republican congressmen out of their homes and break their knees? It's going to be followed, eventually, by some talk radio host sharing a stage with a candidate* and saying something about ass-kicking or showing-those-bastards or what have you. If we're going to do this, can we maybe set up a voucher system, where progressives and conservatives can trade the right to insult one another?

*I suppose the argument is that there's no equivilent to saying this next to the president of all the people. I don't much buy into the cult of the presidency, though, and on the other six days of the week, the president's opponents are perfectly comfortable saying he's not representing them.

To this I would add that I hope that Obama annihilates his Repulican opponent next November.

"OMG! He said annihilates!"

re: #148 Alouette

I spent the whole weekend updating the CSS styles for my website, and now the new styles that I defined for the side and footer navigation bars have attached themselves to the inline links, making them basically unclickable. Here is the site.

Is there a reason you used "span" tags to set off blocks of content, rather than divs? I've always thought span tags were meant for inline content (e.g. highlighting words in a paragraph) as opposed to blocks.

As for the issue at hand, perhaps it has to do with the "display:block" attribute you have on your sidemenu links (i.e. they're getting attached to all your other links as well). Try adding "display:inline" to the a:hover and a:active aspects of your other links (i.e. those in the "main" class).

Unfortunately, the span tag won't help with that - it's more for applying a style to words/items within a larger block. For keeping styles restricted to certain content blocks, divs with their own id or class are usually better.

Also, CSS that appears further down in your stylesheet can override styles set further up, if the earlier styles don't have an attribute defined but the later ones do. Do you ever use Firefox with the Firebug plugin? It's a great way to interactively debug your site within the browser, as it lets you see what CSS is being applied where, and disable/re-enable items at will.

The "display:inline" thing I suggested earlier didn't seem to work when I tested it just now, but when I disable the display:block attribute in the following code blocks:

SPAN.sidemenu A:hover, A:active {
background-color: #666666;
color: #00FFFF;
display: block;
}

SPAN.footermenu A:hover, A:active {
background-color: #666666;
color: #00FFFF;
display: block;
}

...your inline links work fine.

You would support this kind of hunting? Seriously? Using a pack of dogs to chase down deer? Not knowing if the deer are actually killed all the time and leaving maimed and injured deer in the wild lands? What about the possibility of the deer attacking one of the dogs. It's wrong. DNC Chair Dodges Questions on Hoffa

As Congress waits to hear President Obama's jobs plan later this week, the head of the Democratic National Committee dodged questions about labor union leader Jimmy Hoffa's contentious remarks about the Tea Party.

DNC chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz tried to deflect specific questions about Hoffa's comments, in which he told a crowd in Detroit that America faced "a war on workers, you see it everywhere - it is the Tea Party," and urged the crowd to "take these son-of-a-bitches out." Hoffa made the comments while introducing President Obama.

One of the best "deer dogs" we had growing up was this little terrier mix one of the ranchers we hunted with had. Little bastard would head into any thicket (and was small enough to do so) and yap away to flush out the deer in hiding. We got some nice bucks because of that little dog.

I thought they just flushed the deer so the hunter could get a clean shot?

re: #263 darthstar

One of the best "deer dogs" we had growing up was this little terrier mix one of the ranchers we hunted with had. Little bastard would head into any thicket (and was small enough to do so) and yap away to flush out the deer in hiding. We got some nice bucks because of that little dog.

Poor bucks. They deserved to live and not get murdered.

English hunting is done with hounds that usually corner, then shred, a fox. In the US, dogs aren't used as weapons in hunting - at least not normally.

Exclusive Audio: Inside the Koch Brothers' Secret Seminar

"We have Saddam Hussein," declared billionaire industrialist Charles Koch, apparently referring to President Barack Obama as he welcomed hundreds of wealthy guests to the latest of the secret fundraising and strategy seminars he and his brother host twice a year. The 2012 elections, he warned, will be "the mother of all wars."

How about a 9/11 Truther in the mix?

Charles [Koch] spoke again the next evening, following a keynote speech by Fox News host and retired New Jersey Superior Court Judge Andrew P. Napolitano. The judge didn't stray far from his usual libertarian fare; he was met with hardy approval when he declared that the Second Amendment was created to ensure "the right to shoot at the government if it is taken over by tyrants."

Kerry was trying to get hunters in the Midwest to identify with him. He wanted to get them to believe he wasn't going to try to take their guns away.

The tactic didn't work, in large part because pro-gun organizations had already rolled out an aggressive counter-campaign. It's center piece was a poodle in a hunting vest with the caption "That dog won't hunt." It proved effective at painting Kerry as an effete elitist, and ensured his outreach went nowhere.

Overdone appeal to emotion. One cannot allow oneself to be swayed by scenes of death in this case. The deer in question would have to be killed anyways to keep their population in check.

It does not matter if a deer if killed by the teeth of a coyote or the arrows of a human. The reality is the same: The predator kills its prey.

Because it's a big deal to the God & Country types in the red states.

Here in Texas, hunting is damn near a rite of passage. Well, at least it was in my family. It's pretty much a given that you're going to learn how to shoot deer or rabbits or whatever, and you're going to go fishing at some point in your life. We've already killed off all their predators, there isn't anyone to keep the population down other than hunters. In IN you can kill almost a dozen deer a year when you add up all the seasons. They're even having shoots in state parks where the meat all goes to shelters, Win-win.

Up here in Chicagoland, the deer got so numerous the predators reintroduced themselves in the form of coyotes. The problem is that coyotes and wolves are very problematic in populated areas.

Hunting is a difficult policy area since there is a very real need for pest control coupled with a desire of some people to hunt, thus providing a public service for free.

It would be nice, though, if there were more done to prevent unnecessary suffering. I'm not a hunter but my BIL is, and I do respect the fact that he is very conscientious about only going for shots where he has a very high "instant kill" percentage chance.

NYC metro area suburbs in NJ and Rockland/Westchester are seeing a resurgence of deer populations, and are seeing an increase in black bears and coyotes as well. There have been several attempts to carry out bear and deer hunts, and local groups have tried to block them too.

It is a problem when you've got significant deer populations near major population centers - and the deer are a menace in and near highways too - all too often becoming roadkill and causing millions of dollars in damage and costs to localities annually.

Bush: no sense of jubilation at bin Laden's death
RINOOO~!!!11!!1

George W. Bush had the reaction of a decent man grateful to have seen a task he worked at for so long completed. And it was classy of Obama to call Bush himself and tell him bin Laden was dead.

And BTW, don't forget the role the firearms industry played in the death of Osama bin Laden. The Sierra Match King bullets that ended the terror master's life were privately developed for civilian use and later bought by SOCCOM. So the 'gun industry' helped kill bin Laden.

Considering the fact that he was shot in the head, I think it's self-evident that guns had a hand in killing him. However, giving credit to the gun industry as a whole seems like a stretch to me.

You know, maybe it says a lot about me and where I've come over the past ten years in both maturity and politics or that his side has gone completely ape shit but President Bush comes across as a decent guy to me now. I mean I have no regrets at all about supporting Gore and Kerry over him but I no longer hate the man and I think he's a voice of reason in his party now.

George W. Bush comes across as a Loveable Dunce much of the time in my opinion he'd be a good friend, fun guy to hang around with, but not someone you'd want running the country, especially with Dick Cheney as his VP. There's no meanness (well not much more than in any of us) to the guy he's just lead a sheltered life, and we'd probably all be happier if Jeb had managed to win that 1994 election (he lost 49.2% to 50.8%) so he could have been in position to run for President in 2000 instead of his brother.

Because back then you needed to be Governor of a state for more than two years before you could be considered worthy of being President in the GOPs eyes....

I think that's it. As a baseball fan, I'd love to talk baseball with him. Too bad he didn't become commissioner and Selig did heh. I have to say, the guy while no great intellectual isn't the dumb ass I thought he was, I was real impressed with a rare appreance I saw him give at an university where he condemned nativism. That got Pat Buchanan pretty pissed off and talking about how Bush lived a shelter life. Like Pat didn't.

I thank Ford for what they did with Willow Run (managing to produce a big old four engine bomber every 63 min) and making more Tanks than Italy.

But at the same time they were completely devoting themselves to that military task whereas your example seems more like a happy accident and given that Osama was shot in the head, does it really matter what type of bullet (besides a rubber one obviously) was used?

The last time I checked, ALL firearms and bullets are privately developed and manufactured. I can't think of a single weapon that is actively manufactured by the government.

More like lower level private/military partner ships to find what works. The most recent cases are the more durable magazines being made for the AR-15/M-16 that our troops are buying for themselves, or the new 60 and 100 round extended magazines recently made available. Those private projects are delivering greater and more durable firepower into the hands of our warfighters.

I also find it interesting that it's his loyalists, Kathleen Parker/David Frum etc who are coming across as halfway normal people, the only ones with enough spine and sense of self to speak up about the tea party. Interesting.

They still use the issued gear, but for some tasks you want to have more ammo right to hand. A 60 round mag can be useful for a building assault by removing the need for a magazine change. A 100-round mag is very useful for 'mad minute' anti-ambush fire. The more durable mags are carried when units are going where resupply is difficult, so that having your mags last longer is essential or just by soldiers who want to make extra sure their mags will work.

I guess I was different than you guys. I hated the guy. Not hated his policies but hated the man. I still think he could have been more intellectually curious and as I said no regrets for supporting his opponents. I felt and still do that they would make better presidents but the hate is gone. I think it was because I was a teenager for Bush's presidency up until when the Republicans lost Congress. I was naive, overly idealistic, and probably immature. I think I started viewing the guy in a more positive light when I saw that he wasn't a froathing at the mouth bigot on immigration and when I started reading how later in his second term he started standing up to Cheney and being his own man i.e. the Libby thing and now we're seeing that he apparently told Cheney no when Cheney wanted to bomb Iran or was it Syria(saw it on a page last week). I've also come to seperate the politics from the man too since I realize that unlike Perry and the others running now, the guy is likable. I don't see anything likable about any of them except maybe Huntsman and then he disgusts me by pandering to abolish the EPA.

In Bush's case, his politics are anathema to me. I hated his time as governor here because I thought he was lousy at the job. I opposed the war in Iraq and damn near everything he did as POTUS. I knew he was up to his eyeballs in the good ol' boy system of corruption symbolized by Enron. I thought he had a questionable mastery of the English language at times. Please. They believe in the Doughy Pantload's contention that Nazis were liberals/socialists because the word Socialist is in the Nazi party name.

They probably think that Lenin, Hitler, Stalin, and the rest are interchangeable. Why? Because they're idiots.

On a side note since Varek brought up North Korea, I believe I read that North Korea bans facial or at least long hair on men since Kim sees it as western decedence or some crazy shit like that. Funny that since Marx had quite the beard.

One of my favorite SNL TV Funhouse cartoons is one where they had Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden as a super hero duo. It's funny because there were people post 9-11 and still probably do that think Saddam and Osama had the same mindset.

You and I both know that. Anyone with even a rudimentary grasp of history knows that. The teabaggers and nutjobs who hold up signs equating whatever POTUS is in office to Hitler/Stalin/Lenin/etc.? They don't know that because they have no sense of history, no concept of the very real political differences between those leaders, and are just looking for the soundbite.

This isn't going to end well....
Facing default, Postal Service turns to Congress

Drawing the ire of the postal workers' union is a website maintained by the House Committee on Government Oversight and Reform, which promotes the Ross-Issa Postal Reform Act. The website, "Saving the Postal Service," calls for no taxpayer bailouts, and would unilaterally rewrite collective bargaining agreements, cut reduced rates for non-profits and political committees, set up a commission to decide on closing of post office locations, and raise revenue by selling advertising space on mail trucks and in post offices. [There is no mention in the bill of eliminating lawmakers' franking privileges.]

APWU President Cliff Guffey chastised Rep Darrell Issa, R-Calif., for "wasting taxpayer money" with the site, and said the proposed law "would destroy the Postal Service as we know it."

Clearly the only way to solve this problem is take a hedge fund manager who rose from rags to riches by conning everyone he came across, fake his death, and then put him in the witness protection program and in charge or running the post office in such a way that it becomes more effective and less costly....

It worked for Patircian Veterinari at least...

IMO it's just more eliminationism. Same for the aholes labeling gays and feminists "pedophiles". Because what is supposed to happen to Nazis and Apartheid and pedophiles, etc.

Usually, they're the pedophiles, totalitarians, and murder-minded, anyway.

re: #437 Dark_Falcon

Restructuring and downsizing sounds great, except when it's your local post office that gets shuttered. In that case, you demand others be shut but yours left open.

Rinse and repeat for the thousands of locations that are supposed to get shuttered under the USPS plan. They've got to get the union to deal with this as well, and the USPS notes that the bulk of their costs are due to personnel matters. It doesn't help that the USPS has to deal with higher energy costs like everyone else, and that the recession and Internet has reduced usage and rate hikes are not the panacea either.
