Watching was Plan B. Getting prosecutors to go after straw buyers was Plan A, but because the straw sale laws are basically toothless, that wasn’t possible. So you mean they should have gone to plan C.

What was plan C?

What do you think about the lax gun control laws that allow these sales? Shouldn’t we be focusing on how to make those stronger, rather than trying to pin the blame on a scapegoat?

No, because no real trafficking law is going to pass right now. You’d need to design a bill that would not burden lawful purchase of firearms and could not (not would not, but could not) act as a step towards gun registration. I have no idea how that would be done.

Moreover, an effort to actually get something done is often politically unproductive in an election year, especially with people so polarized nowadays. A purist message is a much easier sell, electorally.
