The registered address is also necessary to access public assistance, enroll children in school, register a car, get a telephone (even a mobile) sign a lease or employment contract, etc.

If the USA had this (a ginormous IF), it would greatly change the landscape for undocumented aliens.

If the US had it, then while it might make it harder for undocumented immigrants, it would easy the flow for other underclasses. After all, if the poor and minorities can get assistance without too much fuss, then they might start improving their lives and encroaching on places where “good people” live…
