I’ve considered getting him into a martial art but, until now I’ve figured he wouldn’t *get* it. I’m rethinking it now.

I would highly recommend it. There are some excellent martial arts schools with programs for kids even younger than The Kid, that focus on building self-confidence and defensive use of force.
