I dunno. Water’s is too self-righteous to admit any error. She could be guilty, and still act innocent, because she’d feel she had not done something wrong.

Possibly. But I assume she also has lawyers to consult/inform her whether she did in fact violate any rules. Or maybe the infraction is so minor that it’s better to get it out of the way before the election where speculation could make it seem much worse than it is.

I don’t get this coming from Graham. I suppose it could just be pandering. But it’s not like his position is all that well received by his party. I mean, the idea of amending the constitution is an extreme reaction to an immigration problem.

I don’t see why we don’t encourage more LEGAL immigration. More people living here—more housing needs.
Mexico doesn’t really want more legal immigration either. They want migrant workers who send their earnings back to Mexico.

If we legalized the approx. 24 million illegals who are already here and working and gave them their own Social Security numbers, and added about half again that many to their ranks all paying into to Social Security and Medicare/caid the fiscal deficit on those programs would be gone. It’s more like 12 million. The argument is over whether the Democrats can admit, by refusing to enforce the law, another 12 million and thereby tip the demographics in their own favor.
Our legal immigrants are a great bunch. We should open the gates wider and accept more of the sort we now get. Our illegal immigrants are not nearly so talented on average, because they’ve not been screened and selected for talent.
Going on past form, there is no reason to expect anything but more of the same. Our own working poor have trouble enough finding jobs in this economy without bringing in more competition for low-skill jobs.
Those who face competition for high-skill jobs from skilled immigrants are a different story. Yes, that hurts their chances, if you look only at direct effects. But the indirect effect of high-skill immigration is to improve the chances that the U.S. can lead the world in that industry. When we lead, there are lots of extra jobs as a result. Win-win situation in the long run.

True, there are costs. But if we went the other direction—say we encouraged an additional 3 million immigrants to come to this country legally. No doubt there is demand for that. These people have to live somewhere. It’s no secret that the turnaround in the economy will only happen when the housing market finally recovers.

I must admit, I find it hard to believe that employers who have been knowingly violating the law by employing illegals due to the cheaper labor costs will suddenly be so accommodating to the demands by these newly minted citizens for decent wages, benefits, and all the other items they’ve been denied via threat of deportation.

Enforcement of the labor side of the equation on businesses is probably the most effective way to combat the illegal immigrant labor issue.

Heh. I envision these “newly minted citizens” finding themselves in a position where they say to themselves “Gawt-damnit! These friggin’ illegals are stealing our jobs”.
Why wouldn’t they? If all the illegal immigrant workers here in the States were automagically granted citizenship, they would quickly be replaced by a whole new wave of illegal immigrants ready to be exploited by businesses already using such labor.

Exactly what I’m gettin’ at. The argument in favor of amnesty that says these illegals add so much to the economy ignores that they do so by being illegal. These companies are making all this money off not paying the sort of labor costs that companies using 100% legal workforces do. They get away with paying what are essentially slave wages, denying them any benefits, and (in some cases) working them in conditions that would not pass OSHA inspection by threatening any of those injured on the job with deportation if they report this to the authorities.
These companies have been doing it for decades, granting amnesty tomorrow is not gonna make them suddenly decide to go totally legit. You’ll either find all those newly minted legal citizens standing in the unemployment line with the gringos whose jobs they took, replaced with new illegals, or those companies will see their profits drop when they start factoring in the increased labor costs.

At random, take one million people out of the workforce. Poof gone.
see what happens.
The savings do not in any way outweigh the costs. You’re assuming all 1 million of those illegals do not contribute, don’t have jobs, aren’t valued at their jobs, aren’t functioning members of American society, a conclusion which I really find amazing and stunning that you could come to.
The crime rate for illegals is BELOW legal Americans. If anything, they’re the example. They’re the thing to aspire to.

There is a supply of illegal jobs here, so obviously that will be met with the demand of illegal labor. The problem of illegal immigration is looked at in a backwards sort of way here. We don’t need a “fence” nearly as much as we need to crack down on businesses that exploit illegal immigrants desperate for a better life.

Man I don’t even know
Here’s what I do know: when you have an incredibly poor destitute country that borders a comparably really rich country, and the comparably wealthy white nativist people of border towns and border states start losing their minds about the illegals? I really don’t give a shit. My heart does not bleed for those people. Poor poor white retirees with nice nest eggs. I’ve literally worked alongside illegals, because I worked in grunt-ass health care for 15 years. They were the best workers my company had. They took the job seriously.

I’ve said for awhile, if you want to see the illegal immigration problem go away, don’t go after the illegals, go after what draws them here. Pass new laws and reform old ones so that the cost of a company caught hiring illegals can be close to, if not totally, crippling to that company and then you enforce those laws with a vengeance. You fine them thousands per head, you put the bosses in jail, you block them from taking part in lucrative government contracts, whatever it takes to get the message across. When the jobs dry up, then the illegals will go home of their own choice.
Of course, it’s easier said than done. Democrats won’t go for it because they’re beholden to the future latino vote, figuring that seeming pro-illegal immigration and pro-amnesty will get them in good with those “future voters.” And the Republicans won’t go for it because their buddies in Big Business will scream bloody murder that it’s wrong for government to tell them who they can and can’t hire and so much other bullshit that equates to letting them get away with murder because they make generous “campaign donations.”

I’d say there is a very significant distinction. An American citizen doing something off the books can easily walk away from such a gig and try to find something on the “up and up” if things go sour.
An illegal immigrant has no such luxury, and is for all intents and purposes beholden to the employers that exploit them.
There is absolutely no equivalence between the two.

I use it all the time. When someone asks me what that term means, I give her/him the defiinition.

Churchill ordered UFO cover-up, National Archives show
[Link: www.bbc.co.uk…]
“The government took the threat of UFOs so seriously in the 1950s that UK intelligence chiefs met to discuss the issue, newly-released files show.
Ministers even went on to commission weekly reports on UFO sightings from a committee of intelligence experts.
The papers also include a wartime account claiming prime minister Winston Churchill ordered a UFO sighting be kept secret to prevent “mass panic”.”

The crime rate for illegals is BELOW legal Americans. If anything, they’re the example. They’re the thing to aspire to.
That’s funny; the crime rate of illegal aliens is by definition 100%.
Glancing at the UCR I don’t see a breakdown by nationality and due to the fact that so many states are barred from asking status upon arrest, I do not see how you can state that the crime rate for illegals is less than that of citizens.

Correct, therefore the statement that we should ‘aspire to’ be like the illegals based on a number that would be impossible to quantify is injecting feelings into the discussion.

I agree, it needs to be fixed. It seems to me to be like a leak in a pipe. before you can patch the leak well, you need to shut off the water, or, at the very least, slow the flow to the point that the patch is viable.
How to stem the flow? Prosecute the companies that hire illegal employees; of course that means identifying the illegals…

White House Ducks 9/11 Ground Zero Mosque Project Bouncer
2010-08-05 13:40:00
The Obama administration has distanced itself from the heated dispute over whether an Islamic cultural center and mosque should be built a couple blocks away from the 9/11 Ground Zero.
“This is rightly a matter for New York City and the local community to decide,” CBS News quoted Robert Gibbs, White House Press Secretary, as saying.
It comes despite President Barack Obama’s high profile efforts to reach out to the Muslim community since taking office.
“Islam, as we know, is part of America,” Obama had said last September.
On a number of occasions, Obama has also sought to defend American Muslims from the stigma of the terrorists who share their religion.
“We know that the vast majority of Muslims reject Al-Qaeda,” he said last January.
Based on these statements, it was expected that Obama would take the side of the Muslims seeking to build the 13-story community center and mosque in New York.
However, it is now being said that the President does not want to offend the Muslims nor the families of 9/11 victims, who view the construction of the mosque as an insult to the memories of their loved ones.

He’s lucky to have you covering his back. I went to 12 years of Catholic school, and I don’t know if it was the times (50’s-60’s), or the places (Brooklyn and North New Jersey) or if it was some unspoken policy of Catholic education, but I was left up to my own devices with the bullies.

WTF Alert:
‘Obama Misplaced Trust in Netanyahu’
By LAHAV HARKOV
08/05/2010 16:06
Intel organization accuses Israel of ‘blindsiding’ US on Iran.
A letter from a group of former intelligence professionals imploring US President Barack Obama to prevent a war with Iran sharply critiqued Israel and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s policies, saying they should not be trusted.
Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) said on Tuesday that “comments by senior American officials, you included, reflect misplaced trust in Israeli Prime Minister [Binyamin] Netanyahu” and that Obama’s friendly tone with Netanyahu “was distinctly out of tune with decades of unfortunate history with Israeli leaders.”
The VIPS letter quoted Obama as saying about Netanyahu “neither of us try to surprise each other,” adding that the president “may wish to ask Vice President Biden to remind you of the kind of surprises he has encountered in Israel.”
VIPS is a group of former intelligence professionals of current and former US intelligence officials that was founded in 2003 to protest the use of faulty intelligence to justify the invasion of Iraq. It is headed by former top officials from the CIA, State Department, Department of Deffense, US military and other agencies.
The organization accused Israel of consistantly deceiving the US: “Blindsiding has long been an arrow in Israel’s quiver. During the emerging Middle East crisis in the spring of 1967, some of us witnessed closely a flood of Israeli surprises and deception, as Netanyahu’s predecessors feigned fear of an imminent Arab attack as justification for starting a war to seize and occupy Arab territories…We had long since concluded that Israel had been exaggerating the Arab ‘threat.’”
VIPS then quotes Ha’aretz columnist Gideon Levy, who called Netanyahu “a con artist … who thinks that Washington is in his pocket and that he can pull the wool over its eyes.”
The letter also accuses the “Likud Lobby” of having a disproportionate influence on American policy, citing a recent visit by Senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Joseph Lieberman as proof. VIPS quotes Lieberman as saying that Congress would use “military actions if we must” to keep Iran from becoming a nuclear power, and Graham as saying “Congress has Israel’s back.” The organization then adds that 47 House Republicans have signed a declaration of “support for Israel’s right to use all means necessary to confront and eliminate nuclear threats posed by Iran … including the use of military force.”VIPS also estimated that Israel would attack Iran in the next month, without American approval.
“Israel’s leaders would calculate that once the battle is joined, it will be politically untenable for you to give anything less than unstinting support to Israel, no matter how the war started, and that US troops and weaponry would flow freely. Wider war could eventually result in destruction of the state of Israel,” the letter reads.
VIPS’s recommendation for preventing an Israeli attack on Iran is as follows: “A strong public statement by [Obama], personally warning Israel not to attack Iran would most probably head off such an Israeli move. Follow-up might include dispatching Adm. Mullen to Tel Aviv with military-to-military instructions to Israel: Don’t even think of it.”
The letter concludes with this advice for Obama: “They are probably telling you that, since you have privately counseled Prime Minister Netanyahu against attacking Iran, he will not do it. This could simply be the familiar syndrome of telling the President what they believe he wants to hear.”
“Quiz them; tell them others believe them to be dead wrong on Netanyahu. The only positive here is that you — only you — can prevent an Israeli attack on Iran.”

It was almost like the teachers and other adults felt it was an esteem building exercise to let the bullies do what they want, and the general attitude was YOU should fight back, do something about it yourself, stand up for yourself you whining sniveling little piece of shit.

I would highly recommend it. There are some excellent martial arts schools with programs for kids even younger than The Kid, that focus on building self-confidence and defensive use of force.

A problem is that verbal bullying doesn’t get recognized as bullying. Neither does emotional bullying, something I learned when dealing with a similar issue for my daughter.
For what it’s worth, schools are beginning to add clauses to the anti-bullying rules and regulations, but there’s still a lot of failure. The failure’s causes are two-fold.
First, it’s harder to recognize when it’s happening. It’s the problem with politically correct speech. There’s a line when it goes from stopping bullying to excessive constraint of speech. That line is not bright but is instead a zone in which the break point is not merely different for each individual but different for that individual depending on a lot of other factors. Something I’ll tolerate today may be unacceptable tomorrow after I fail a test, to make up an example.
The second cause is the lack of evidence. You’re getting, literally, he-said/he-said battles with (usually) biased witnesses and no marks, bruises, torn clothes, or anything else to help figure out which side is lying or exaggerating.
It isn’t easy to solve. It happens, though, and is recognized enough people are trying to fix it. I wish you luck.

NY passed a $136.5 billion budget yesterday. It increased spending by 2.6% or about $3.2 billion over last year’s budget. How’d they do it? Well, they raised taxes by more than $1 billion. Business as usual.
If the state eliminated the tax increase and cut spending by $1 billion, you wouldn’t have needed the tax hikes.
That thought didn’t even cross their feeble minds. Instead, we’ll have tax hikes and when the revenues fall short, the budget will again be in deficit and the state will be looking for a bailout. Again.

Mandy I know exactly what your kid is going through! I was held back a year which put me straight in the sights of the school bully’s, I was picked on and beaten up at least three times the next year, they trashed my books every chance they got and I had to learn to get tough real fast. I didn’t have the benefit of a concerned parent to help me out like your son (daughter?) does, my Mom had to work full time and had my four brothers to ride herd on so I was pretty much on my own. I can only thank God I didn’t have access to a gun or I probably would have been one of the first to use it in a school shooting. I was depressed all the time and only the fact I had three big brothers that found out what was happening kept me from seriously getting into trouble. All the picking on and crap finally stopped in High School. I’m glad your child has you on his/her side.

Walter. You know this. If you “pop” them, they will back down.
Not always.
Standard myth is that if you stand up to a bully, if you ‘punch them in the nose’, your problems are done. Standard myth is overly simplistic.
It will work if there are weaker fish for the bully to move to. It will work if the bully believes the effective resistance was not a fluke. It will work if the bully is smart enough to recognize the strategic situation has changed.
Thing is, the bully is going to think that if he gives up he is labeling himself as a victim. After all, giving up is what made you (and others) victims in the first place. As a result, most bullies are going to have to try to suppress the escaping victim for what they perceive as their own self-interest.
This means you will get more attention, more bullying, more opportunities to stand up to the bully. Barring really stupid bullies, it also means the bully will use heavier tactics; supporters to hold you being one example, with indirect attacks (damage to your property) being another.
Now the prison-yard recommendation above works - show the potential bullies that while you may not be the toughest fish in the yard you’ll make any attackers bleed if they take you on. But it only works if you use it at the first opportunity. It also carries costs in that you then have to prove you aren’t just another bully. Not a big deal in a prison society, but pretty big if you want to be part of a cooperative society.
Mencken was right. When the issues involve people, easy answers are probably wrong.

I was bullied some as a kid but it wasn’t too bad. Most of my experience with bullies has been as an adult with college professors, bosses, etc. My people skills are very basic and I made a conscious choice to simply tolerate them and muddle along without changing my behavior and staying true to who I am as a person. I can put up with almost anything for a couple years.
I wouldn’t really recommend this method for most people. I’m not very social and I’m now self employed and work alone. The path of least resistance has served me pretty well.

Rush Limbaugh: Electric Cars are Overpriced AIDS Ribbons
Politico reports that Rush Limbaugh spent a huge chunk of yesterday’s radio broadcast lambasting the Chevy Volt and the tax credits supporting them. Through the course of his ranting, it became clear — as it so often does — that Limbaugh has no idea what he’s talking about. In it, he asserted that “nobody wants” electric cars, and that they amount to nothing more than overpriced AIDS ribbons that allow their owners to “show everybody how much better [they] are than everybody else.” How ignorant is Limbaugh? Let me count the ways.

Democrats are in a corner on the tax-cut debate, and they know it. If they follow President Obama’s plan and allow tax relief for the top earners to expire, they get blamed for the “biggest tax hike in American history.” But if they extend more than $3 trillion in tax cuts, most of them originally voted against in 2001, they get blamed for the biggest deficit in history. Sounds like fun.

Senate Democrats will hold a September showdown over trillions of dollars in expiring tax cuts passed under President George W. re: #239 Killgore Trout
Electric cars are overpriced - the $41,000 MSRP for a Volt is heavily subsidized that after credits and other incentives brings the price down to about $33,500 . That is still more expensive than the Prius, and it is doubtful that people will drive enough to make up the difference in price in the savings on gas (and what gas you do have to buy has to be the premium variety - which itself is sold at a premium over regular). If given the option between the Volt or a Prius, people are going to take the Prius and pocket the difference. GM is producing the car in limited numbers, which means that its recoupment of the costs will stretch even longer than it ordinarily would.
However, the limited run would be a boon for dealers, who are expected to charge far more than the sticker for the status symbol cars. That was a phenomenon common with the Prius when it first arrived - and dealers were able to charge at or above the MSRP for several years until production ramped up.
The Truth About Cars Volt discussions.
GM is betting that people will go in on the leasing promotion for the Volt, but its toughest competition will be for those going with the Leaf, which is supposed to give drivers a 100 mile run before needing recharging (the Volt can go 40 miles, but has an onboard engine to supplement once the batteries are exhausted). Both are being priced comparably for leasing terms - and once you factor in gas charges, the Leaf looks favorable for those who don’t plan on extended drives during a day - 100 miles or less, which is a majority of commuters. The downside for the Leaf is the lack of charging stations (let alone fast chargers).
GM is planning on bringing back the mild hybrid next year - after they killed it previously when they dumped Saturn and couldn’t justify the cost of maintaining the program for the Chevy Malibu on its own (that should tell you plenty about the marketing and desirability of the GM hybrids).

Your forgetting a big peice of the much bigger picture. If we legalized the approx. 24 million illegals who are already here and working and gave them their own Social Security numbers, and added about half again that many to their ranks all paying into to Social Security and Medicare/caid the fiscal deficit on those programs would be gone. Really, $92 Trillion in deficit spending, gone just like that…
Wouldn’t we do better to legalize every man and woman in China? With 1 billion immigrants, demand for housing, food, clothing, vehicles, etc. etc. would soar, and with 1 billion people paying into social security and medicare, all our problems would be over.

Today in WSJ they are reporting that the U.S. is in talks with Vietnam about providing assistance to VN’s nuclear program, including helping VN create its own nuclear enrichment operation.
Such help is useful to any nation seeking nuclear weapons. How can we complain about Iran’s getting that kind of capability, and then turn around and help Vietnam? If the assistance does its work, VN will be that much closer to having nuclear weapons, and we’ll have provoked China. If it doesn’t work, nothing will have changed except we’ll have wasted more money and provoked China.
In either case, we help Iran out with the awkward publicity surrounding its own nuclear program.

If batteries get the boost in energy density getting kicked around (3 to 10 times current density) in some testbed projects, that’ll change. But for now, the advantage gasoline holds in energy density makes it the winner.

Ah, but that’s a chicken-egg argument that in the end is false. Did the automobile have to await deployment of a system of gas stations?
If the batteries improve (and I hold that to be the critical technology), then we’ll see automobiles built to challenge gasoline cars. You’ll see a temporary industry in ‘portable chargers’ that connect between standard household (110) voltage and the car, and another in home modifications to allow full-power relatively rapid charging. Stations already existing would create ‘electric pumps’ fairly quickly - basically a high voltage outlet with appropriate connector and a meter.
I really don’t think the infrastructure argument stands. If the cars are made, people will be glad to take money to keep them going.

what a mess eh?….none of this would be happening if the feds has enforced the fucking laws…pretty simple, but now it’s reached epic proportion and everybody is fucking everybody else…it’s turned into the biggest joke of the last 40 years…cities pass laws to disregard the feds and the feds do nothing…racism!

14 Americans to be charged with joining Al Shabab, an al Qaeda wannabe/spinoff/affiliate group. 12 are from Minnesota, 1 from Alabama, and 1 from California.
The charges were due to be formally announced at a news conference at noon ET at the Justice Department, NBC reported. The 14 people include 12 from Minnesota, one from Alabama and one from California, the officials said.
Al-Shabab is Somalia’s most-feared militant group.
The group recently claimed responsibility for bombing two sites in Uganda where people were watching a soccer World Cup game on television, killing 76 people. Al-Shabab said the blasts were in retaliation for civilian deaths caused by African Union troops in Somali capital Mogadishu.
U.S. counter terrorism officials believe there may be as many as 50 U.S. citizens fighting with al-Shabab in Somalia, according to NBC News, with some from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and also from other cities with large Somali-American populations including Columbus, Ohio; Seattle; and Kansas City.

No one seems to talk about that. I am all for electric cars (if viable), but the electricity, and hence pollution in producing it, must come from somewhere. Nuclear power is “clean” but no body seems to be building these days. Wind, solar, thermal are not up to speed as to make any significant difference. Does anyone know if there is info out there on the effect on the power grid of a slew of electric cars? Would there be a measurable effect?

I disagree in that the ubiquity of gas stations and the ease with which to fuel up have to overcome the difficulties with instituting a whole different method that has to rely on a creaky old electric power distribution system that lacks not only the capacity for additional demand, but NIMBY has thwarted many a power generation and distribution system upgrades necessary to keep the country humming along.

Interesting is Nancy Nee’s take, which spouts the talking points quite well - but which is factually wrong:
Nancy Nee of Long Island, N.Y., wants Muslims to be able to build a community center — just not so close to ground zero, where her brother, 35-year-old firefighter George Cain, died 10 years ago.“We’re upset,” Nee, 48, told AOL News today in a phone interview. “Not at the fact that Muslims have a right to practice their religion here … we’re not like that. But I feel that it’s a slap in the face to put it close to ground zero.”
Nee said the building’s size, as well as its location, was a problem. “It’s a 13-story building that will tower over the other buildings,” she said. “It’s almost like a trophy. The whole thing just reeks of arrogance at this point.”
She’s upset about the size, which isn’t going to tower over any buildings between it and Ground Zero. It’s size is comparable to the rest of the north side of Park Place. 100 Church is across the street, and it ranges in height from 15-20 stories tall. 90 Church is even more massive than that. Last time I checked, 15-20 is taller than 13. Also, the attacks were 9/11/2001, so her brother died 9 years ago this September (fact check with the report in issue?)

In her mind it will tower over every other building in Manhattan, and would do so even if it was built under ground. This is the reality of how many people feel, because of what it symbolizes to them. As Abe Foxman correctly pointed out, the mosque project as constituted will not assist folks like Nancy in her healing process.

Perceptions are valid, people have differences of opinion. Many see the Islamic terrorists who killed 3000 people that day as, well, Islamic.
Just like it was just pointed out to me that Christians are lumped in with abusing children.
There are valid, personal reasons for some to not want this thing built, and there are bigoted reasons.

govt central planning….this is interesting
Dodd blames this growth “away from urban areas and rural town centers” on “poorly coordinated transportation, community development and housing policies.” What he means is that governments have failed to compel people to live in a way he approves of.
Dodd isn’t alone in thinking his ideas are so important that he’s willing to use the force of government to implement them. Though he’ll be gone at the end of this term, the Beltway will still be lousy with this arrogance and its destructive influence. As we’ve said before, we need a new class of lawmaker in Washington.

A roll back to the levels prior to the enactment of EGTRRA and JGTRRA will result in a tax hike for nearly all Americans. You’re just rolling with the semantics.
EGTRRA generally reduced the rates of individual income taxes:
* a new 10% bracket was created for single filers with taxable income up to $6,000, joint filers up to $12,000, and heads of households up to $10,000.
* the 15% bracket’s lower threshold was indexed to the new 10% bracket
* the 28% bracket would be lowered to 25% by 2006.
* the 31% bracket would be lowered to 28% by 2006
* the 36% bracket would be lowered to 33% by 2006
* the 39.6% bracket would be lowered to 35% by 2006
The tax rates that most Americans have been enjoying since the enactment of the Bush tax cuts will end 13/31/2010 unless Congress votes to extend/amend. That means that the tax rates that these people will see in tax year 2011 will be substantially higher. To them, it will be a tax hike. It certainly will feel like a tax hike when your current rate increases anywhere from 10-30% or more not to mention reinstituting the marriage penalties that force married filing together pay more than those filing singly.

Look.
I merely used the logic of those who are opposed to this Mosque. I just transposed it onto a different religion.
My point was to simply point out the bigotry of those opposed to the Mosque by throwing their own logic back at them.
And all I did was mention that the two issues were not really equal.
And you think they are, so, no problem, two opinions.

Sounds like they’re putting words in his mouth to me,
It’s basically a grant program for cities and towns. All they have to do is submit a grant proposal that closely adheres to the principles of HUD’s Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities and they are eligible to receive Federal funding. It’s also voluntary. A community, town or city doesn’t have to apply for these grants. The text can be found at the bottom of the page here. Or the summary:
8/6/2009—Introduced.
Livable Communities Act of 2009 - Establishes in the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) an Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities (OSHC). Establishes in the executive branch an independent Interagency Council on Sustainable Communities. Requires the OSHC Director to establish a program to make comprehensive planning grants and sustainability challenge grants to eligible entities (partnerships between a consortium of units of general local government and an eligible partner, which may be a metropolitan planning organization, a rural planning organization, a regional council, or a state). Requires the use of a comprehensive planning grant to carry out a project to: (1) coordinate land use, housing, transportation, and infrastructure planning processes across jurisdictions and agencies; (2) identify potential regional partnerships for developing and implementing a comprehensive regional plan; (3) conduct or update housing, infrastructure, transportation, energy, and environmental assessments to determine regional needs and promote sustainable development; (4) develop or update a comprehensive regional plan or goals and strategies to implement an existing comprehensive regional plan; and (5) implement local zoning and other code changes necessary to implement a comprehensive regional plan and promote sustainable development.
Requires the use of a sustainability challenge grant to: (1) promote integrated transportation, housing, energy, and economic development activities carried out across policy and governmental jurisdictions; (2) promote sustainable and location-efficient development; and (3) implement projects identified in a comprehensive regional plan. Directs the OSHC Director to study and report to specified congressional committees on incentives for encouraging lenders to make, and homebuyers and homeowners to participate in, energy-efficient mortgages and location-efficient mortgages.
As is usual with these programs real estate developers and construction firms stand to make a profit from these types of grants.

You’ll see a temporary industry in ‘portable chargers’ that connect between standard household (110) voltage
Doubtful. This isn’t an electric lawn mower or hedge clipper you’re recharging that has a very small engine and is designed to run for a couple of hours

If they can offer them with built-in adapters so folks can just plug the car into a standard outlet, then people will buy them so long as they perform well at a reasonable cost.
That’s the goal I’ve read in several places. Plug into household current overnight for a slow charge. Go to a filling station for a faster (high voltage/amp) charge.

And it doesn’t matter. I’m sympathetic to these families and their “healing process,” although there are obviously some families who don’t have this problem with Park51.
But their feelings do NOT matter in this, just like the feelings of the Bigot Brigade do not matter. We’re a nation of laws, not populist fear-mongering emotion.
I do not agree that the choice is between laws and populist fear-mongering emotion. The honest and heartfelt feelings and emotions of the victims of terrorism deserve more than mere lip service. They should be accommodated as much as possible by all Americans, albeit not at the expense of trampling the constitutional rights and freedoms of Muslims.

I love how these people care about the feeling of 9/11 families all of a sudden. Seems like I remember Ann Coulter having something to say on the issue a while back.

They really don’t care about the 9/11 families. This is just a convenient excuse to hide the fact that their objection to Park51 is nothing but pure bigotry.

That’s if you believe tax rates play zero role in economic development. If you believe that higher tax rates bring in more money because the rest of the economy won’t react to those higher rates then you’re right, raise them. If, OTOH, if you believe higher tax rates stifle economic growth and leads to a loss of revenue then raising rates is a clear loser. At this point, with the economy in the tank, the worst thing that the feds could do is raise taxes.

I would imagine that there are a number of different people who feel a number of different ways about the 9-11 victims’ families. Is it really fair to generalize based on the ravings of one wingnut?
