There’s no doubt that we aided the insurgency a bit — I once got in a long drawn out head butting here when I said that it was a real big mistake to fire all the Baathist bureaucrats in the country and in the army, since they were the ones who knew how things ran.

I argued that the remaining Baathists after Sadaam’s capture needed amnesty, and that peace and some kind of accommodations would need to be made for them before we could get near victory. I compared them to the Loyalists who were disenfranchised in our Revolutionary war, and one of the Ben’s (I forget which) went berserk on me over that.
