With gloves on, I hope, so the acids in your skin didn’t get on the paper.
I’ve seen my dad examining books with special tweezers to turn the pages before, wearing a mask so he didn’t breath any moisture on them. It’s kind of cool. Academic CSI.
With newer documents, you don’t really have to treat them quite so carefully because the paper is more robust. As long as access is heavily restricted, they’ll preserve well enough.
