Slightly off topic, but you folks in the states are not getting some of the news we are seeing up close here off the coast of East Africa.

Well last month, Iran’s President visited the Comoros to strengthen ties between the Islamic peoples of Iran and the Comoros.

During the visit in February he urged the audience to reject teachings that stand in opposition to traditional Islamic theology (it is not in the article).

Anyway, one of the islands (Mayotte), had a vote coming up, and they had to decide whether to break away from the Government of the Comoros and it’s President who is a Cleric trained in Iran and do away with traditional Muslim beliefs. Polygamy, wife beating, women getting married in their early teens etc.

The Islamic clerics asked the people of Mayotte to vote against breaking away from the Comoros and its Islamic traditions.
Guess how the vote went. Well more than 95% of the people of Mayotte voted to break with the Islamic clerics and become a part of France.

I wonder how the people of Mayotte can recognize stupidity when they see it, but the Columbia faculty can’t recognize folly of giving the Iranian President the time of day?
