He was so eager to put on his “Discoverer of the New Watergate” hat on that he forgot the keep advice from the original Watergate: “Follow the money.” Since there was no money (Gus hasn’t been paid for this story), there logically should be no conspiracy. But he refused to let logic get between him and a scoop, and thus put his foot right into it.

Or did he? His conspiracy meme will likely spread faster than the truth. So the real question is: Will Politico issue a correction once they are advised of the facts, or will they try for an “OUTRAGEOUS OUTRAGE!!1” short-term traffic surge. I hope and expect that Politico will uphold its standards and do the former
