“Doing the messages” means grocery shopping? That seems a little odd. I wonder how that phrase got started.
A turn of phrase I only know from Svottish, Irish and N English dialects.
Funny thing is that the Dutch have the same expression: “de bodschapen doen”, literally “doing the messages” in the sense of doing one’s small chores in town, which is where the English language might have acquired it.
