All the wingnut sites, plus Fox, are reporting that CAIR lost their tax-exempt status. Did this really happen?
Papa says if you see it in the Sun, it's so, but I tend to hold out for CNN or someone covering it, when WND, Jihadwatch and Fox are the only reporting agencies.

No, its not a punishment for anything, they supposedly filed the wrong paper work.

Today's theme for the Family Research Council: Theocratic nationalism.
Activists: NBC should air Pledge daily
The Family Research Council, a conservative Christian advocacy group, is turning up the heat on NBC after it edited out "under God, indivisible" - twice - during a taped piece of children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance as part of last weekend's final round coverage of the U.S. Open Golf Championship.
The group wants to see the pledge recited on NBC, in its entirety, daily.
[...]
The phrase "under God" was not always in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The pledge was written by Francis Bellamy, a former Baptist minister who had left the pulpit and was working at a magazine, Youth's Companion. The magazine was putting together a nationwide celebration to honor Columbus discovering the New World. The pledge was expressly patriotic according to author and political scientist Richard Ellis in "To the Flag: The Unlikely History of the Pledge of Allegiance."
The pledge and the protocol for the pledge did not make it into U.S. law until June 22, 1942.
The phrase "under God" was added in 1954. Rep Louis Rabaut, D-Michigan, offered an amendment to add the phrase to the pledge. It was a homage to President Abraham Lincoln who had famously used it in the Gettysburg Address.
[...]
Perkins said in addition to the public service announcement of a daily Pledge of Allegiance he said he would also like to see NBC produce a program explaining the history of the pledge and why "under God" was inserted in the first place.
NBC hasn't responded to Perkins about his requests. A spokesman for the network declined to comment further on the matter.
A couple of comments:
First, the "Under God" change to the Pledge of Allegiance was made due to pressure from Joseph McCarthy's HUAC inquisitions during the 1950s.
Second, given Tony Perkins' white nationalist past, I wonder if he also supports returning the pledge to its original salute?

As long as the Family Research Council is will to accept Khorne as the God to whom the pledge is being made, I don't have a problem with it.
Otherwise, they can fuck right off.

It's a dry run for the caucus, which comes up in January.
Caucuses work by everyone showing up in a large room, and each campaign has a home-turf in the room, so to speak. After hearing speeches, the people in the room migrate to the group in which they want to belong. Haggling goes on, people change groups, etc. When it is all done the groups count their members. Whoever has the most people in their groups get the most delegates for the state convention, who then elect the delegates for the national convention.
I assume the straw poll "lots" bidding is just for campaigns to mark off the area of the room in which the event will take place.

McCotter is an interesting character. Became aware of him after he 2010 election as he is senior enough to pull some weight in the Congress. He wasn't originally a Tea drinker, from what I understand, but with the Overton Window shifting so far to the right he's had to move along with it.

I'm of no religious beliefs, so since about elementary school I never said "under God". But it's kinda awkward being silent for a part of the pledge. So toward the end of my time in High school, I started saying the pledge as a sort of word grab bag. "...One Nation, Under _____, indivisible..."
Some of the ones I remember doing on a regular basis:
Under Pasta (pastafarian pledge)
Under Durden (Fight Club)
Underwear
Under Buddha/Allah (I don't discriminate against other people's deities)
Under Canada
...yeah I was/am kind of a nerd.

I wonder (given how every Census causes each representative to, well, represent more and more constituents) when the disparity between the average congressional district and the least populous state become great enough to change how the districts/number of reps are determined.
Come 2012, the average population of 434 congressional districts will be above 700k, while the one congressional district that is all of Wyoming will have around 550k, or 20% less.

re: #46 Spocomptonite
Come 2012, the average population of 434 congressional districts will be above 700k, ...
Which is far too many people for any single Representative to be ever able to meet them even in large groups/
Back in 1911, when the 435 figure was decided up, the US population was under 94 million. Which meant each Rep had just over 200,000 constituents on average. Now, while transportation was slower back then one could still get 500 people into a big hall, and with a goodly fraction of the population being children anyway, it meant a Rep could in theory at least be seen by most of his constituents even if personal conversations were impossible.

Considering that both parties go off the deep end from time to time, it's a good thing all around to have the Senate as a bit of a flywheel.
Our founding fathers had seen it all in Parliament and decided that senators, with six-year terms and responsible to an entire state rather than just a district, would serve that purpose. They nailed it.

Chicago police chief has his history exactly backwards:
Emanuel police chief blasts NRA, Palin on 'government-sponsored racism'
[Link: www.politico.com...]
Chicago Police Chief Garry McCarthy told parishoners at Saint Sabina Church earlier this month that the easy availability of guns in the United States is the extension of a tradition of "government-sponsored racism" that began with slavery and Jim Crow."This is sensitive. You know, because everybody’s afraid of race. Have you noticed that? Everybody’s afraid of race," McCarthy, a former New York and Newark police official said. "So here’s what I want to tell you. See, let’s see if we can make a connection here. Slavery. Segregation. Black codes. Jim Crow. What, what did they all have in common? Anybody getting’ scared? Government sponsored racism."
He's obviously oblivious to the fact that souther blacks used the 2nd amendment to protect themselves and gun control laws were used to take that right away from urban blacks. Moron.
Someone in Chicago needs to send him a book:

There are a number of factors that go into the crime/murder rate in Chicago. Legally owned firearms are not one of those factors.

More on that arrest the other day of the 2 reporters at a public meeting in DC:
Why I Was Arrested Yesterday at a D.C. Taxi Commission Meeting
[Link: reason.com...]
On June 22, 2011, I attended a meeting of the D.C. Taxi Commission for a story I'm currently working on about a proposed medallion system in the district.About 30 minutes into the meeting, I witnessed journalist Pete Tucker snap a still photo of the proceedings on his camera phone. A few minutes later, two police officers arrested Tucker. I filmed Tucker's arrest and the audience's subsequent outrage using my cell phone.
A few minutes later, as I was attempting to leave the building, I overheard the female officer who had arrested Tucker promise a woman, who I presumed to be an employee of the Taxi Commission, that she would confiscate my phone. Reason intern Kyle Blaine, overheard her say, "Do you want his phone? I can get his phone."
Check out the video. The guy gets seriously sad when they put the cuffs on him. It's not funny, I find it infuriating, but I did chuckle at his expression:

re: #130 RogueOne
This comment from Balko nails it:
One thing about the video I found interesting: Note the outrage from the taxi drivers as Tucker is hauled off in handcuffs. The vast, vast majority of D.C. taxi drivers are immigrants, most from east Africa and the Middle East. And yet they seem to have a far better grasp of free expression and the need for transparency in government than the federal and city employees working in America’s capital city

A Dallas police officer has been given a 15-day suspension over a November 2010 domestic disturbance in Garland.Assistant Chief Vince Golbeck handed down the suspension to Officer Joshua Shipp during a disciplinary hearing Thursday afternoon.
According to police records, Shipp was in full uniform when he went to his estranged wife's apartment about 8:45 a.m. on November 14. He found another man in the apartment.
During the encounter, police say Shipp struck the other man several times. When the other man tried to drive away, authorities say, Shipp followed him and kicked out the tail light of his vehicle.

Interesting article relating to the "Power is the Most Insidious of Vices". It states that most prisonr rapes are perpetrated by the guards.

If I didn't think most of these people considered themselves Christian, I'd be likely to think they need a dose of old-time religion to temper their vice. But we all know what repression does . . . .

This is Levon Sarkisyan's mugshot. The Connecticut native was arrested for breaking into a stranger's home, telling the owner that God made him do it, and then proceeding to smash statues of Roman soldiers and a marble table with a fireplace poker. Then he took a shower and dressed himself in the clothing of a deceased man who used to live there. When police took him into custody, he informed them that he'd smoked "a strange strand of herb."

Or any of the federal max facilities. My BiL was tossed in a max facility at 18. Within a month he had his teeth knocked out and his ear ripped off. Doesn't take much of an imagination to understand how or why. He went in as a non-violent offender and ended up stabbing a guy 27 times a few years later. Again, it doesn't take much of an imagination to wonder what could make a guy like that so angry.

To be honest. I read that yesterday and didn't see any proof or evidence that supports the claim of that title. It seems like it would be a logical conclusion but they didn't provide any examples. They did note the lobbying but they didn't show example of laws they support that would put more people in prisons.

My main worry is the shifting of prisoners from fed/state prisons to private ones and the ridiculous drug sentencing laws. Gives them an incentive not to reform such laws.

I'd think this system of behavior is derived from the "prison culture" that has pervaded for decades if not centuries. Perhaps broad systemic change should be hastened from above that culture (e.g. reforms as suggested in ggt's article) that should promote a system of human behavior where abuse is no longer tolerated or even promoted.

Books and drawing materials. He just left a program where he was locked down for 23 out of 24 hours a day for over a year. He's now on phase 2 which is why they moved him. When he was first incarcerated he would intentionally get into trouble so they would lock him up. That's one way to stay safe.

The best approach to prison reform is to keep people out of them. Get rid of unneeded laws and sentencing--starting with drugs. Most of the kids in the lockup where my daughter teaches are there because of a problem we consider a medical condition if the patient is rich enough.

Murdering civilians continues in Syria today...
US urges Syria to withdraw troops from border with Turkey
Washington: Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is warning Syria to withdraw troops now massing near its border with Turkey, saying their presence is worsening an already bad situation for refugees and risks sparking border clashes with the Turks.
Clinton told reporters at the State Department on Thursday that the US saw the situation as volatile and "very worrisome" and that the Syria military should immediately end attacks and provocations in the region. She said the buildup of soldiers several hundred metres from the Turkish border was another sign of the Syrian government's intent to repress its own people.
Troops open fire, 'killing at least two'
Syrian security forces opened fire on demonstrators Friday killing at least two people and wounding nine others in the town of Kiswah near Damascus, activists said.
Thousands of protesters demonstrated across Syria after the weekly Muslim prayers calling for the fall of the autocratic regime of President Bashar Al Assad in response to a call by the Facebook group Syrian Revolution 2011, one of the motors of the protests under the banner, "Fall of legitimacy".
Totally messed up situation going on over there. Is there any chance Syrian forces would cross the Turkish border to continue the killings?

Crazy mayor writes a book...
Fmr. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin’s Bizarre New Memoir
Ray Nagin has published a memoir about his time as mayor of New Orleans during Katrina. Nagin writes in the book that he began to become paranoid during the immediate response to the disaster, at one point thinking that a private defense security firm was attempting to bug his office:
The guards managed to access Nagin’s 27th-floor suite and install “all kinds of wires” they claimed were “for a satellite connection.” Ultimately, though, their efforts were thwarted when “Greg (Meffert) and crew stopped (them) cold,” Nagin writes, referring to his former chief technology officer.
“And after several rounds of going back and forth, our unwelcome visitors got the message that we were not going to allow them to take over or gain access to my room to plant bugging devices.”
Nagin also thought at one point that the CIA would try to assassinate him with a poisoned dart after he took to the radio to criticize President Bush, FEMA, and Senator Mary Landrieu, among others:
“I thought to myself, ‘I’m a dead man! I have just publicly denounced the governor, U.S. Senators, FEMA and the president of the United States,’” he writes. “I started wondering if during the night I would be visited by specially trained CIA agents. Could they secretly shoot me with a miniature, slow-acting poison dart?
And at one point, he was paranoid that government medical staffers would inject him with something poisonous:
“I was still a little paranoid and again started imagining a secret CIA plot where in six months I would be gone,” he writes. “After thinking for a minute, I said to them, ‘Okay, you can give me shots, but I want you to do the same for my two security guys.’
Heh.

Hillary Clinton adviser compares internet to Che Guevara
Hillary Clinton's senior adviser for innovation at the US state department has lauded the way the internet has become "the Che Guevara of the 21st century" in the Arab Spring uprisings.
...Ross said that the internet had "acted as an accelerant" in the Arab spring uprisings, pointing to the dislodging of former Tunisian president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali in little over a month. The internet had facilitated leaderless movements, Ross added, describing it as the "Che Guevara of the 21st century".

Here's a good comment from that Che article...
[Link: www.guardian.co.uk...]
The good thing is the internet is unlikely to engage in the counter-revolutionary murder of the fellow revolutionaries unlike the Stalinist thug Ernesto Guevara.
Whilst his image - on T-shirts, posters, and beer labels- continues to make money for capitalists, there seems to be a revival among the young in the idea of Che as idealistic hero and fighter for freedom. This hero cult seems to have infected many young radicals
He himself personally carried out executions. Indeed the first execution carried out against an informer by the Castroists was undertaken by Che. He wrote: "I ended the problem giving him a shot with a .32 pistol in the right side of the brain".
On another occasion he planned on shooting a group of guerrillas who had gone on hunger strike because of bad food. Fidel intervened to stop him. Another guerrilla who dared to question Che was ordered into battle without a weapon!
Apart from the drive towards militarisation in the guerrilla groups, Che also had another important duty. He acted as the main spreader of Stalinism within J26M. He secretly worked towards an alliance with the Popular Socialist Party (the Cuban Communist Party). Up to then there were very few Stalinists within J26M and other anti-Batista groups like the Directorate and the anarchists were staunchly anti-Stalinist.
The communists were highly unpopular among the anti-Batista forces. They had been junior partners of the regime and had openly condemned Castro's previous attacks on Batista in 1953. They belatedly joined the guerrilla war.
With the Castroite victory in 1959, Che, along with his Stalinist buddy Raul Castro, was put in charge of building up state control. He purged the army, carried out re-education classes within it, and was supreme prosecutor in the executions of Batista supporters, 550 being shot in the first few months...

Sometimes I wonder if Che-lovers suffer from the same delusion as the people on the Gaza flotillas. They think of these poor, oppressed people bravely fighting The Man (tm) for the right to live in peace and harmony. What they don't realize is that that image is a carefully manufactured propaganda job. Granted, in both cases there are plenty of people living in poor conditions who ARE fighting to better themselves; but the public scenario has been carefully whitewashed for a specific goal. In Che's case, that would be Communism. In the Palestinian case, it's the eradication of Israel.

But for years of Palestinian terror attacks against Israel, those fences would not have been necessary. In fact, those fences were specifically constructed following the Intifadas to protect Israelis from suicide bombers; it was so successful that the terrorists switched tactics from suicide bombers to rocket attacks - particularly from Gaza.

And the gay marriage bill continues in a holding pattern in NY, even as GOP opponents in the State Senate know that if the bill was given to a floor vote, it would pass.
It's all on the GOP in the State Senate - and whether they want to incur the wrath of their GOP constituents who would oppose gay marriage on religious or personal grounds and threaten primaries against those voting for the gay marriage bill, or from the general elections where they would face losing their razor thin majority in the State Senate.
I think they'll take the former, and pass it before they adjourn for the year rather than risk a major loss in 2012.

So I'm looking at the news this morning and eyeballed this local moonbat cause. Apparently it's against PG&Es Smart Meters. First we have this:
Capitola Council votes not to enforce SmartMeter moratorium
CAPITOLA - In February, when the City Council passed a moratorium on SmartMeter installations for 2011, it acknowledged it was mostly symbolic.
The California Public Utilities Commission has sole authority over Pacific Gas & Electric Co., and city staff informed the Council enforcement would be an issue.
[...]
About 12 people spoke against SmartMeters citing health concerns, for humans and animals, from the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the wireless signal. In the past, customers have claimed the meters are inaccurate.
"Thousands of Californians have reported health problems after SmartMeter installations," Stop Smart Meters! Director Joshua Hart said.
PG&E rejects both claims, saying SmartMeters are more accurate than the old meters, and their overall wireless transmission levels are much lower than cell phones.
[...]
And here's there website:
The smart meter debacle is a huge threat to our health, safety, privacy, and wallet. But it is also an opportunity and a teachable moment about the dangers of wireless technology, corporate control, and false solutions to a looming climate catastrophe. With your help, we can work toward a truly sustainable, equitable and democratic energy system, and new wireless standards that will put human and environmental health before profit. The ‘smart’ meter fight has brought about new, unlikely political alliances. We plan on strengthening these new ties for the battles to come.
At first I thought the opposition would be more on the Tea Party end. Instead I learned it was on the moonbat end.

Howard Jacobson: Why Alice Walker shouldn't sail to Gaza
It should not need arguing, this late in the ethical history of mankind, that good people can do great harm. One of the finest and funniest novels ever written -- Don Quixote -- charts the damage left in the wake of a man who would make the world a better place.
Human beings are seldom more dangerous than when they are sentimentally overcome by the goodness of their own intentions. That Alice Walker believes it is right to join the Freedom Flotilla II to Gaza I do not have the slightest doubt. But beyond associating her decision with Gandhi, Martin Luther King and very nearly, when she talks about the preciousness of children, Jesus Christ, she fails to give a single convincing reason for it.
"One child must never be set above another child," she says. A sentiment that will find an echo in every heart. But how does it justify the flotilla? Gaza is under siege, Israelis will tell you, because weapons are fired from it into Israel, threatening the lives of Israeli children. If the blockade is lifted there is a fear that more lethal and far-reaching weapons will be acquired, and the lives of more Israeli children endangered.

He could have changed the name to cuddles and furries, and it wouldn't have changed the stench of death and misery spread by the terror group he helped spawn.
His terror outfit has caused widespread death, misery, and mayhem - much of it within the Muslim world - against fellow Muslims all because they are seen as martyrs and/or nonbelievers (insufficiently Muslim for the al Qaeda/Salafist ideology).

I have some rain from last week that I would like brought up on charges of aggravated assault and stalking.
Thank you.
It hasn't rained at all in Lubbock during June. June is normally the wettest month here, with an average of 2.9 inches. Since the first of the year, we have had 1.02 inches of precipitation, compared to an average of 9.8 at this point in the year. We have already had 15 days over 100 degrees. The record for a whole year is 22.
In 20 years this place will be nothing but a mass of sand dunes with a space cleared for the Buddy Holly statue. Long-term trends are not encouraging at all.

US steps ups pressure on Gaza flotilla activists
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is stepping up pressure on activists planning to challenge Israel's sea blockade of the Gaza Strip, warning that they will face action from Israeli authorities and that American participants may also be violating U.S. law.
The State Department said Friday that attempts to break the blockade are "irresponsible and provocative" and that Israel has well-established means of delivering assistance to the Palestinian residents of Gaza. It noted that the territory is run by the militant Hamas group, a U.S. designated foreign terrorist organization, and that Americans providing support to it are subject to fines and jail.
The warning is the third in as many days and follows the announcement by 36 Americans that they will sail aboard a U.S.-flagged vessel in a flotilla to Gaza.
Those moonbats wont listen. They will put themselves in danger, then blame Israel.

5 Years of Captivity: What Gilad Missed
Saturday marks the 5-year anniversary of the hostage-taking of Gilad Shalit.
At the time, Gilad was a 19-year-old Israeli soldier keeping Israelis safe from attack by patrolling the border with Gaza – on the Israeli side. After tunneling into Israel, Palestinian gunmen from Hamas and other terrorist organizations killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded Gilad. He was then dragged back into Gaza by tunnel, and has since been held in an undisclosed location and in unknown conditions.
Hamas has refused to allow the Red Cross to visit Gilad and confirm his state of health (in direct contravention of international law), and has publicly released very minimal proofs of life. Hamas insists that they will only return Gilad once Israel releases hundreds of convicted Palestinian terrorists – many of whom have murdered Israeli civilians.
To make matters worse, a Facebook group was recently launched by extremists calling for the kidnapping of a female Israeli soldier, to serve as a "bride" for Gilad.
This week, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs released a website to raise awareness of Gilad's situation – [Link: www.whatgiladmissed.org....] If you can, take a moment to visit the site and use it to contact the UN, and make your voice heard on this important issue.

Yesterday, it started with a WND article/posting and it spread from there. Volokh had something about it - noting the matter came up when Saudi Airlines joined SkyTeam and that the airlines have to conform to whatever visa/passport rules are in use by the countries they fly to - that are outside the airlines' control. But they still complain about Delta's actions, even though the Saudis were pushed to drop certain requirements.
If we're going to punish Delta for its flights to Saudi Arabia, I guess all these other airlines would also be up to the same issue (but some look like they're also SkyTeam members).

Delta only needs a couple of lawyers and paralegals to file motions...no need to try to "prove" anything as USA Today would try to keep this in the courts for years. Just keep them wasting money on lawyers.

Time for wingnuts to expand the boycott.....
Re: Delta and the Saudis (UPDATED)
Delta does not operate service to Saudi Arabia and does not codeshare with any airline that serves that country. Delta does not intend to codeshare or share reciprocal benefits, such as frequent flier benefits, with Saudi Arabian Airlines, which we have confirmed with SkyTeam, an Amsterdam-based 14-member global airline alliance.Delta’s only agreement with Saudi Arabian Airlines is a standard industry interline agreement, which allows passengers to book tickets on multiple carriers, similar to the standard interline agreements American Airlines, US Airways and Alaska Airlines have with Saudi Arabian Airlines.
All of the three global airline alliances – Star, which includes United Airlines; oneworld, which includes American Airlines, and SkyTeam, which includes Delta – have members that fly to Saudi Arabia and are subject to that country’s rules governing entry.

Well, the newest Obama Outrage has been dumped in my in box. There's actually a germ of basis for it this time.
Yesterday President Obama was talking to soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division. He mentioned awarding the Medal of Honor to Jared Monti of that division, and how honored he was to do so. His error? He recalled Monti being the first non-posthumous award he gave. In reality, SFC Monti's award was posthumous. His first non-posthumous was for another soldier (SSG Giunta, 173d ABN).
The rightwing is going ballistic about this, not least because it's a real error instead of having to twist words and context. And I admit it's tremendously stupid given the president is probably using a prepared speech with limited ad lib.
But it's still annoying seeing the mountain being made of this molehill.

Minor nontroversy. President Obama has been pretty focused on recognizing troops and has done so quite often in two and a half years. The wingnuts feigning outrage are actually doing more to insult the troops than they are the President...since they're using the troops as weapons to throw at the President. A simple correction (without the OUTRAGE!) would show more respect for the troops and offer the same criticism of the President.

Yes and no. I think that the act of flicking ash, on a standalone basis, is hardly worhty of a hefty fine. But in a state with a severe brush- and wildfire problem, ashes followed by butts can be a serious public safety threat.

You're an angry driver. I like that - my wife and I fight about it constantly.
No...I just grew up in fire country. Watched my brother lose his house a couple of years ago (along with 25 other families). I don't tolerate firebugs.

I chase people down (on foot) in parking lots for cutting across lots and lines. Give them a very loud and angry lecture on children you can't possibly see, laziness, and his (or her) suspect parentage.

I actually met him years and years and years ago
He was a "silent" partner in about a half dozen barrooms in South Boston. They wanted to buy satellite dishes for each of them for the free sports feeds available back then
He made me an offer I couldn't refuse!!!
((no,, actually ,, he never said a word, but he was there))

Status quo. For one, we aren't the ones doing the airstikes anymore. We're using AWACS and refueling aircraft to support other nations, like France, the UK, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden (who recently intensified involvement). What we are doing now is less than the scale of Yemen and Pakistan in actual fighting.
In addition, the Senate and House are irreconcilable. This exacerbated by the fact that McCain and Graham are not supporting House Republicans.

It's deja vu.
I think you mean Kosovo though.

My sister had a guy confront her when she honked at him for cutting her off across across parking lines. She kept her calm, but she said afterward she was pretty shaken up about it.

I generally do not recommend this type of corrective action to anyone (a) unarmed; or (b) male and >180lbs; or (c) sane
