A big issue in the US is that our lives are based on a highly connected international economy, but local American jurisdictions want to live in the 19th century.

Even for those of us in major urban areas that have, for example, high speed internet, we still have to buy such services from near monopolies. I pay Cox $90/month just for my internet connection.

This is because it’s a profit-center for Cox, to sell such internet connection at a high price even though their costs were sunk a long time ago for the interconnectivity.

Even in a place as high-tech as San Diego county, alternatives to the local cable company are not that readily available. For example, Google Fiber is not available where I live, even though I live in one of the country’s most populous metropolitan areas.

Again, what America cares about is automobiles, and designing our lives around our cars. This manifests itself in so many ways, including the idea of driving to work.
