That was a theoretical nicety and a reality nightmare. Starbucks did not think that through.
I don’t know. It was kind of bizarre and random and it’s definitely awkward as all fuck, but I’m laughing my ass off on the inside just because it’s also brave and long overdue / necessary in some form. It’s comedy in it’s purest form, the absolute subversion of expectations, especially in modern, introverted, “everyone go out together and ignore each other while looking at their iPhones and laptops” society.
The only thing that’s expected about it in retrospect is, of course it would be Starbucks that does this, with their “we’re the Third Place ideology.”
