You catch flak because your positions are not consistent with you having any principle beyond your team winning, This is the most revolting aspect of modern conservatism, that winning is the only thing that matters, and that you’ll take the country over the cliff, oppose legislation your own side created, just to win.

At a certain point, one cannot continue to cheer for and work for A Bad Team and still be a Good Person. We mostly deal respectfully with you because your support for the worst sort of people is expressed politely, but again, at some point if you support a vile theocrat like Ted Cruz, you’re no better than he.

That’s why conservatives love sports. From an early age you are taught to worship your “team” and hate the other team. To treat like heroes the athletes and even let them get away with rape. You also get kids to learn early about hating authority, the refs.

This translates into hate for government and regulation. It’s pretty genius if you think about it. So many small towns who only have religion and sports, and each tell them that you are not a true Christian or American unless you are a Conservative Republican.
