There is a difference between “asking for it” and “deserving it”.

I think we confuse those a lot.

A man, for example, flashing money in a bad part of town gets mugged, and his friends call him an idiot for being so stupid. We “blame” the victim, but then again we don’t. It isn’t the same as saying that the mugger is not ultimately and completely responsible for the crime.
