My current thought is that Brown and friend purchased actual goods but that Brown snatched the Rillos when the clerk was distracted and gave him to his friend. Clerk noticed and tried to get Brown to pay, then the rest of the incident played out.

Either way, a petty crime and completely unrelated to Brown’s murder.
