The term is “jus soli”, and there is more to it than one might imagine:

I am aware of that, and Germany just switched its criteria for granting citizenship from nationality (of the father) to place of birth in 2000.

But they restrict citizenship only to those who are born here to legally resident parents.

But the whole question of “legal residence” is a relatively modern one, even passports were not common until the XIX century; people travelled and settled wherever they could make a living.

Europe’s big trade and industrial centers, lke those of America, were always melting pots of various nationalities.
