Here’s a little exercise for everyone:

When you go to the supermarket and you’re pushing your stuff through the checkout, look at the cashier’s name tag and when you pay for your order say “Thank you [Cashier’s Name] have a great day!”

If you ask the bagger to help carry your stuff to the car, give them a tip.

I always try to ensure that I treat cashiers with the utmost politeness and slip in a “have a nice day” after every transaction. My first high school job was working at a retail store; I will never do it again, but I gained a real appreciation for the mooks behind the counter.
