Say for example a seat supplier went under, it would affect a number of automotive manufacturers almost immediately. All parts are made just-in-time, there is no stockpile of parts to draw from. It would take weeks to move operations to other suppliers. And its not just seat suppliers. Steel suppliers, chassis components, paint and sealers, etc. Nearly all suppliers operate on wafer thin margins. To have suddenly lost all the GM and Chrysler business would have brought many of the suppliers down. I’m pretty sure Ford execs in Dearborn breathed a sigh of relief at news of the Government bailout of GM and Chrysler.

You are underestimating the complexity of the situation.
