Well, IIRC, in 1955 there were still areas that were literally dirt poor.

I remember my Dear Ole’ Dad went back to the area in which he grew-up in the 1990s. He comment that there were no more shacks —everyone had mobile homes. I think he hadn’t been back there since the early 1960s.

Standards have changed dramatically.

We lived in England in 1955. As Americans we had a car, a tv set and a refrigerator. Working class English families typically didn’t (though fridges were becoming fairly common). A horse drawn wagon (for real) still delivered ice door to door and horse drawn farm carts were a common sight. Anyone who has been in Britain recently knows that they have long since caught up with, and in many respects surpassed, us. This is true in most of western Europe.
