But that was going to be ambient heat anyway, all the black manages to do is catch it locally rather than let it disperse over the surrounding square meters. If you painted an acre of the desert black, the area including it and the surrounding eight acres would average just about the same. Just as if you painted an acre white, it wouldn’t begin to snow there. Now, an acre of mirror, might manage to reflect enough ambient energy back into space to make a cooling difference, but a good mirror is 90% to 99% effective - and even so, gets hot in the sun.

I’m not that sure of the physics, but wouldn’t be surprised if an acre of solar cells might not just cool the area by some fractional amount.

both are hotter than shit, but the sand also cools off faster, whereas the rocks stay warm for hours.

dark absorbs heat, white reflects it. you put more heat absorbing surface in a given area, it’s gonna get hotter sooner, get hotter over all, and stay hotter longer.
