Marriage is rarely bliss
But, surely it would be worse
As particles to pelt
At thousands of miles per sec
About a universe
In which a lover’s kiss
Would either not be felt
Or break the loved one’s neck.

It’s about Vincent Malloy, a boy who like to believe he’s Vincent Price. The film is narrated, funnily enough, by Vincent Price:

A painter accepted the task of painting a church steeple. He had 10 gallons of white paint. Half way down the steeple he had already used 6.5 gallons. He made sure no one was looking and then diluted the remaining paint with paint thinner.

He finished the job, cleaned his brush and rollers, and looked up to see that there were two distinct colors of white on the steeple.

“Oh, no!” he exclaimed, “What can I do now?”

A clap of thunder roared above him, and a booming voice was heard saying, “Repaint! And stop your thinning!”

PRIORITIES SHIFT

Trees-first policies might get the chop in the wake of Victoria’s fires:

Laws governing the clearing of native vegetation are under review as part of the Brumby Government’s response to the bushfire crisis.

Following strong public debate on being able to clear vegetation near homes following Victoria’s devastating bushfires, the State Government has begun talking to building and local government groups on possible changes to the laws.

This is potentially good news for rock shifters, dozer borrowers and burn stoppers, all of whom have faced stupid local government laws in recent times. Meanwhile, fires erupt again near Melbourne.

UPDATE. Haven’t heard too much from the Extreme Weather Heroes lately.

That’s only 53 years ago!

‘I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $20.00.’

‘Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be long before $2,000. 00 will only buy a used one.’

‘If cigarettes keep going up in price, I’m going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.

‘Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?’

‘If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.’

‘When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we’d be better off leaving the car in the garage.’

‘Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.’

‘I’m afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL of DAMN in it.’

‘I read the other day where some scientist thinks it’s possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas.’

‘Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn’t surprise me if someday they’ll be making more than the President.’

‘I never thought I’d see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.’

‘It’s too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.’

‘It won’t be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.’

‘Marriage doesn’t mean a thing any more, those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.’

‘I’m afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.’

‘Thank goodness I won’t live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.’

‘The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.’

‘There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.’

‘No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $35.00 a day in the hospital it’s too rich for my blood.’

‘If they think I’ll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.’

Good- that can be a sort of self-made, small-scale economic stimulus plan for homeowners who want to rent heavy equipment or hire labor to help clear excess trees or brush.

I posted a link awhile back to an Aussie family in Victoria who cleared a bunch of brush and trees from their property in 2004 and got taken to court and fined A$100,000 for violating various ‘green’ laws- yet five years later, their home was the only one left standing for miles….

Good, would any jury convict if the prosecutor was stupid enough to indict someone who was clearing brush after this? Not sure how it works down there in Australia. In America most District Attorneys would refuse to enforce such a stupid career killing law I think. The Fed might though, they don’t care.

He really had a hate on for so called ecologists, enviromentalists, and President Carter. The fascinating articles are where he rips apart so-called alternative energies, like wind power, and ethanol fuels. My Get Up And Go Has Got Up And Went

How do I know my youth is all spent?
My get up and go has got up and went
In spite of it all, I’m able to grin
When I think of the places my get up has been

Old age is golden, I think I’ve heard said
But sometimes I wonder as I crawl into bed
My ears in a drawer, my teeth in a cup
My eyes on the table until I wake up

As sleep dims my vision, I say to myself
Is there anything else I should lay on the shelf?
But nations are warring and business is vexed
So I’ll stick around to see what happens next

When I was younger, my slippers were red
I could kick up my heels right over my head
When I was older my slippers were blue
But still I could dance the whole night thru

Now I am old, my slippers are black
I huff to the store and I puff my way back
But never you laugh, I don’t mind at all
I’d rather be huffing than not puff at all

I get up each morning and dust off my wits
Open the paper and read the obits
If I’m not there, I know I’m not dead
So I eat a good breakfast and go back to bed

Ghosts of my past
Even after all these years, I still get fan-mail about USS Clueless. After nearly four years you’d think people would give up on the idea of me starting to blog continuously about politics again, but I get letters asking me to start.
Forget it. Not gonna happen. I have occasionally made posts like that here, but it isn’t something I’ll start doing routinely.
My least favorite subject about which to blog, back in the day, was “alternate energy”. I made a few posts about that and those are among the most-linked articles in the USS Clueless archive (for example, just today), and I get mail about those, too. The usual theme is, “Hey, did you see this? Ha! Now what do you think, eh? Ready to change your mind?” Sigh. Here’s one I got today:
I happened upon some old entries on USS Clueless in which you express considerable skepticism about the technical feasibility of large scale thermal solar plants. In some ways, I share your pessimism (see for example, my “Energy Independence Isn’t Very Green” - hoover.org . But I can also see some possibilities for political and technical breakthroughs. I wonder if you’ve had occasion to revisit the question of large scale solar installations recently, and if so, would you refer me to the URLs.
At least he was a lot less confrontational than many of them. Here’s the reply I sent him:
I don’t blog about that kind of thing anymore. I never enjoyed blogging about energy, anyway, because for too many people “alternate energy” is more about religion than about physics. They believe that if we are just creative enough, we can overcome fundamental physical limitations — and it’s not that easy.

In order for “alternate energy” to become feasible, it has to satisfy all of the following criteria:

1. It has to be huge (in terms of both energy and power)
2. It has to be reliable (not intermittent or unschedulable)
3. It has to be concentrated (not diffuse)
4. It has to be possible to utilize it efficiently
5. The capital investment and operating cost to utilize it has to be comparable to existing energy sources (per gigawatt, and per terajoule).

If it fails to satisfy any of those, then it can’t scale enough to make any difference. Solar power fails #3, and currently it also fails #5. (It also partially fails #2, but there are ways to work around that.)

The only sources of energy available to us now that satisfy all five are petroleum, coal, hydro, and nuclear.

My rule of thumb is that I’m not interested in any “alternate energy” until someone shows me how to scale it to produce at least 1% of our current energy usage. America right now uses about 3.6 terawatts average, so 1% of that is about 36 gigawatts average.

Show me a plan to produce 36 gigawatts (average, not peak) using solar power, at a price no more than 30% greater than coal generation of comparable capacity, which can be implemented at that scale in 10-15 years. Then I’ll pay attention.

Personally I believe that alternative energy production methods should be sought and researched, if only to reduce the air polution around cities (not to mention return all the crackpots with oil back to goat herding economics where they would otherwise be). However, I do not understand how the environmentalists expect to both transition 100% to current renewable enegry sources, while at the same time converting all cars to electric propulsion. Unless they found some awesome electricity generation technology they’re not talking about, they’re off their rockers.

A rabbit one day managed to break free from the laboratory where he had been born and brought up.As he scurried away from the fencing of the compound, he felt grass under his little feet and saw the dawn breaking for the first time in his life. ‘Wow, this is great,’ he thought.

It wasn’t long before he came to a hedge and, after squeezing under it he saw a wonderful sight lots of other bunny rabbits, all free and nibbling at the lush grass.

“Hey,” he called. “I’m a rabbit from the laboratory and I’ve just escaped. Are you wild rabbits?”
“Yes. Come and join us,” they cried.

Our friend hopped over to them and started eating the grass. I tasted so good. “What else do you wild rabbits do?” he asked.

“Well,” one of them said. “You see that field there? It’s got carrots growing in it. We dig them up and eat them.”

This, he couldn’t resist and he spent the next hour eating the most succulent carrots. They were wonderful.

Later, he asked them again, “What else do you do?”

“You see that field there? It’s got lettuce growing in it. We eat them as well.”

The lettuce tasted just as good and he returned a while later completely full. “Is there anything else you guys do?” he asked.

One of the other rabbits came a bit closer to him and spoke softly.
“There’s one other thing you must try. You see those rabbits there, “he said, pointing to the far corner of the field. “They’re girls. We shag them. Go and try it.”

Well, our friend spent the rest of the morning shagging his little heart out until, completely spent, he staggered back over to the guys.
“That was fantastic,” he panted.

“So are you going to live with us then?” one of them asked.
“I’m sorry, I had a great time but I can’t.”

The wild rabbits all stared at him, a bit surprised. “Why? We thought you liked it here.”

“I do,” our friend replied. “But I must get back to the laboratory. I’m dying for a cigarette!”

People also forget that the electricity that could hypothetically power those nifty, squeaky-clean electric cars will likely come from a carbon-spewing, coal-fired electric power-plant.

But they won’t see the emissions coming from their own actions, so they’ll be satisfied.
My father is visiting me from Toronto, and the other day he told me that all garbage from Toronto is being trucked to Michigan, because no local council would be willing to host a landfill. That is just crazy stupid thinking. The so called environmentalists don’t want a landfill in their backyard, but they’re fine with trucking garbage hundreds of miles in CO2 spewing trucks.

[Link: chizumatic.mee.nu…]

Another good post on alternative energy:

“Alternative Energy”: For people who can’t add.
(Part 1 of 2)

Sigh. I’m continually amazed how many “scientists” can’t do basic math. Like this nutwad who thinks we can solve all our problems by using solar power to light up the country.

“If 2 percent of the continental United States were covered with photovoltaic systems with a net efficiency of 10 percent, we would be able to supply all the U.S. energy needs,” said Bulovic, the KDD Associate Professor of Communications and Technology in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

And how big is 2 percent of the continental US? As Will Collier points out, slightly larger than the state of Georgia.

He also does the math on how many orbiting, and thereby much more efficient solar panels, would be required to match the output of a nuclear plant.

The Space Station solar panels are fairly large as such things go, about 8,740 square feet in area. At 64 kilowatts of power for every 8,740 square feet of solar panel, you’d need about 136 million square feet of panels to generate a single megawatt of electricity. Just for comparison’s sake, the Farley Nuclear Power Plant near Dothan, Alabama, can produce as much as 1,776 megawatts of power. That kind of output would require approximately 242 billion square feet of orbiting solar cells—about 8,700 square miles, an area larger than the state of New Jersey.

Both of these pie (or state-sized satellite) in the sky concepts have one little problem that happens to come up every time MIT professors who know absolutely jack about grid power generation start spouting off. You can not generate base power with solar energy. Nor can you do it with wind energy. Nor can you do it with tide energy. Why? Well, here’s a little primer on power generation.

There are three kinds of generation that need to happen in order for the buttons to light up on your microwave. But before I get into that, one needs to understand the concept of load. Most people would tend to think that power generation works in a positive flow model, in that when you generate a given amount of juice, it goes on the grid and is then consumed. This is wrong. In fact, power generation works in a negative flow model, meaning that there is a given demand on a grid at any given time, that demand is load, and it is not a static thing. Now, if you were to go and build a power turbine in your back yard and hook it up to the grid, you would find a rather interesting display of physics, in that you could throttle the generator based on how much load you put on it, not how much fuel you dump into whatever you have spinning it.

90 gmsc  Tue, Feb 24, 2009 1:00:10am

“Alternative Energy”: For people who can’t add.
(Part 2 of 2)

Base generation, or base load, is what keeps the lights on all the time. It is a constant power generation, the output of which rarely if ever fluctuates as a result of its power source. There are only three kinds of fuel that can currently be used to generate base power: Hydro dams, Nuclear plants, and Fossil fuel burning plants. Why? Because those are the only methods one can use to produce a given amount of power, and be absolutely certain that it will be putting out that same amount of power next week, or next month, or next year. If you did not have base power generation, you would have massive power fluctuations with different supply loads, and the whole grid would collapse. (This is what happened on the east coast a few years ago. Imagine it happening on an hourly basis.).

The second type of generator is a ramp, or load control generator. This type of power generation is used to provide juice for demand loads, like when everyone gets home from work at 17:00 and cranks up the AC. Load control is, again, almost entirely done by fossil, nuke or hydro plants, because certain demand models are built for various locations at various times of the year, and those demands have to be met. That means one needs a power source that can be ramped up on demand, or to use the correct slag, more load can be placed on a given generator to match demand, and the power system for said generator is able to keep up with it.

The third type of generator is a peak generator. THIS is where solar, wind and other hippie-brand, spotted-owl dicing power generation comes into play. See, solar and wind generators are never constant, because their output, or the amount of load they can accept, varies greatly with environmental conditions. Cloudy day? Solar plants are screwed. Wind dropping off? Wind plants are screwed. It is because of this dramatic fluctuation in load handling that every wind and/or solar station on the grid, has a fossil generator running right next to it to manage load. These peakers can produce energy at specific times, and when they can, that energy can be put on the grid (via a load balancing generator). However, as soon as their generation rate drops below a certain level, the load balancing fossil generator can no longer keep up, and the load demand needs to be transfered away from the peak plant and put on to either a ramp or base plant.

So, feel free to point out, the next time so tofu-munching sprout fairy goes on about how clean and pretty wind and solar plants are, that there’s a big horkin’ turbine right next to every single one, burning natural gas or oil.

Anyway, that is how power generation works. That’s how it has to work, because there is currently no way of storing really, really big amounts of power in a manner that is even remotely efficient. Load must be managed, and in order to manage dynamic load, you need base generation via a static power source.

You would think a frickin’ Associate Professor would understand such a simple concept, but evidently that’s not the case.

…. one of my favorite responses from:

chizumatic.mee.nu

As long ago as the late 70s I was trying to explain concepts such as energy density to solar power freaks. After some years of aggravating and generally futile arguments about nucear power plants, I began to preface any such argument by handing the person a piece of paper (often a bar napkin) and pen, then requesting they draw a schematic of a pressurized light water reactor. If they could not do that, I would then point out they were not equipped to argue the pros and cons of nuclear power with me, and turn to other less volatile subjects such as the Gnostic Heresies.

Agreed to some points. The problem with all alternatives is cost, efficiency and space. Most alternate solutions require large foot prints.

costs are a factor of economics, so if enough people buy solar panels the costs will be more reasonable. Of course this wouldn’t be a practical method of electric generation in Canada, but in Israel where I live it would be great (actually most houses here have solar water heating panels, which are great). Regarding space, with solar, there is space on roofs, and where solar is most practical, ie desert, there is usually lots of place (again, not so relevant for Canada). Efficiency also will improve as costs come down.
All of these will take time, so a gradual transition is necessary.

Saving for Greatness

A fellow freethinker who works for World Financial Group shared this document with me. Their sales representatives regularly give this flyer to prospects. The flyer names no original author of this fine dissertation, but it certainly resonates with the Objectivist ethics of financial management.

Your savings, believe it or not, affect the way you stand, the way you walk, the tone of your voice — in short, your physical well-being and self-confidence. A man without savings is always running. He must. He must take the first job offered, or nearly so. He sits nervously on life’s chairs because any small emergency throws him into the hands of others.

Without savings, a man must be too grateful. Gratitude is a fine thing in its place. But a constant state of gratitude is a horrible place in which to live. A man with savings can walk tall. He may appraise opportunities in a relaxed way, have time for judicious estimates and not be rushed by economic necessity.

A man with savings can afford to resign from his job if his principles so dictate — and for this reason he will never need to do so. A man who can afford to quit is much more useful to his company and therefore more readily promoted. He can afford to give his company the benefit of his most candid judgments.

A man with savings can afford the wonderful privilege of being generous in family or neighborhood emergencies. He can take the level stare of any man … friend, stranger or enemy. That ability shapes his personality and character.

The ability to save has nothing to do with the size of income. Many high-income people spend it all. They are on a treadmill, darting through life like minnows.

The dean of American bankers, J.P. Morgan, once advised a young broker: “Take waste out of your spending; you’ll drive the haste out of your life.”

If you do not need money for college, a home or retirement, then save for self-confidence. The state of your savings does have a lot to do with how tall you walk.

Because the LDP, which has run the government of Japan for most of the post-WWII era, is on shaky grounds today (Aso could very well be the last straw), and the conservatives within that party are always afraid that the US will strengthen Chinese relations at the cost of Japanese relations.

Living in Japan was an eye-opening experience for me… gave me a greater appreciation of our form of government (at the same time giving me aphrension about American society’s ability to cope with changes in this century.)

If you want to read up on current Japanese affairs, blogger Tobias Harris often gives more meat than many other writers on the subject. From his latest entry:

[…]Aso could be in for a rude surprise Tuesday. This administration will most likely not share the Bush administration’s seemingly endless patience with Japan, patience that faltered in the final years of the administration as it struggled to implement the 2006 realignment agreement and keep Japan committed to the six-party talks.Despite Obama’s welcoming Aso as the first foreign leader to meet with him in Washington, and despite Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to Tokyo last week, the Japanese establishment continues to fret about the new administration’s approach to Japan.
[…]
But unlike the previous administration, the Obama administration looks unwilling to praise Japan for marginal, symbolic contributions to the effort [in Afghanistan.] While respecting Japan’s constraints on the use of force abroad, the adminstration appears ready to take Japan at its word. Japanese leaders talk of the need to contribute abroad even as they are reluctant to commit the Self-Defense Forces? Fine, then make a meaningful civilian contribution, the new administration has signaled.

Well, the other day I was talking to the sun god Apollo, and he denies that solar cells heat the ambient area, says it’s not like he’s going to shine any hotter just because some fool sets up a panel.

well, last time i checked, they were dark, aka black, the better to absorb your homeboy’s precious bodily fluids for conversion into electricity.

however, they only convert x percentage of that energy into juice (the other kind) and therefore, all the other absorbed energy is converted into what?

my guess is heat. YMMV, but if i put a black panel out in a desert that is otherwise all light colors, it’s gonna be the hottest thing out there. that’s why when we’d go to Irwin, we’d put black water cans on top of the vehicles, when we had water at all, to take a field shower, and keep our drinking water in the tan ones so the water would stay near the ambient 120* or so for drinking….. and we’d only shower at twilight, so we didn’t burn the crap out of ourselves.

Local heating makes sense. Solar panels are mostly black to absorb energy rather than reflect it.

Mere mortal, they won’t keep you warm at night, and they won’t warm you during the day, either. In fact, every photon that your clever device turns into an electron-hole pair, is a photon that does not get degraded into infrared heat, at least not until you run it six hundred miles into a light bulb or something.

pretty much my point: unless conversion is 100%, all the waste has to go somewhere, and if the surfaces are more absorptive than the local norm, it’s gonna be hotter. ever watch the heat shimmer off a big parking lot versus the grass area off to the side?

not sure about where you live, but n=most of our deserts are relatively light colored (basalt fields, lava flows, etc, excluded) so as hot as they get in the day, they retain jack after the sun goes down. most of the energy is radiated back up, heating the atmosphere, and then shedding either up or out….

now: you add more dark, heat absorptive mass to the area, and it’s gonna retain more heat, and for longer, just like re roofing my house with a lighter color would make it that much cooler in the summer.

188 BlueCanuck  Tue, Feb 24, 2009 2:33:47am

re: #181 redc1c4

I believe you are spot on with that assumption. Most solar panels have a top rated efficency of about 18-20%. I think this point about waste heat has been mentioned somewhere before. Usually that’s why deserts are suggested for solar farms. Also most deserts have very little cold cover as well so get more sunlight during the year.

re: #181 redc1c4

But that was going to be ambient heat anyway, all the black manages to do is catch it locally rather than let it disperse over the surrounding square meters. If you painted an acre of the desert black, the area including it and the surrounding eight acres would average just about the same. Just as if you painted an acre white, it wouldn’t begin to snow there. Now, an acre of mirror, might manage to reflect enough ambient energy back into space to make a cooling difference, but a good mirror is 90% to 99% effective - and even so, gets hot in the sun.

I’m not that sure of the physics, but wouldn’t be surprised if an acre of solar cells might not just cool the area by some fractional amount.

Well, the other day I was talking to the sun god Apollo, and he denies that solar cells heat the ambient area, says it’s not like he’s going to shine any hotter just because some fool sets up a panel.

Apollo was the Greek moongod. Solar panels do cause local heating in as much as they are dark and absorb the solar radiation, whereas the sand on the desert floor is highly reflective. A massive solar panel installation will have a significant effect on local weather given the increase in solar radiation absorption and corresponding decrease in reflection. This effect has been demonstrated by experiment.

Similarly, massive wind turbine installations effect local weather by “sucking” kinetic energy out of the wind.

One cannot say either case is good or bad, just that it does effect weather.

I’m not that sure of the physics, but wouldn’t be surprised if an acre of solar cells might not just cool the area by some fractional amount.

Are not most roofs already dark-ish? Few are the bright white of snow (which reflect most of the visible light.)

Remember, whatever amount of light is turned into electricity would go into the “minus” column on the “heat island effect” accounting sheet.

Suspect that the difference in the color of a normal roof (tar paper shingles or wood shingles) is only slightly lighter than that of a PV array… so when subtracting the energy converted into electricity via the PV array it likely is a wash.

Plus, say a normal house in the US is on a 6000 sq ft lot… the area used for a PV array would only be a small fraction of that.

Nevertheless, the takeaway from this is that passive solar use (e.g., through designing a house better) is even a better choice than PV.

having been in the basalt regions of Irwin, and the sand, the black rock is hotter than the white sand.

both are hotter than shit, but the sand also cools off faster, whereas the rocks stay warm for hours.

dark absorbs heat, white reflects it. you put more heat absorbing surface in a given area, it’s gonna get hotter sooner, get hotter over all, and stay hotter longer.

dark absorbs heat, white reflects it. you put more heat absorbing surface in a given area, it’s gonna get hotter sooner, get hotter over all, and stay hotter longer.

Actually there’s almost no difference, all else being equal, between dark colors and light colors. What is much more important is the surface finish. Very smooth or glossy surfaces absorb much less than rougher surfaces (or, thought of another way, glossy surfaces reflect more).

Most said Mr. Obama should pursue the priorities he campaigned on, the poll found, rather than seek middle ground with Republicans

It’s all in how the questions were asked. For instance, i’ll bet that they question was NOT phrased
“Do you approve of the stimulus package that Obama wants”
RATHER
“Has Obama tried to reach out to republicans to help with the credit problem?”

The answer to #1 would be NO
The answer to #2 would be YES (in fact, he did try for their “help”, but in that the bill sucks, didn’t get it)

Dan was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the
family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when
his sickly father died, he decided he needed a wife with which to share his
fortune.

One evening at an investment meeting he spotted the most beautiful woman
he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away.

‘I may look like just an ordinary man,’ he said to her, but in just a few
years, my father will die, and I’ll inherit $65 million.’

Impressed, the woman obtained his business card.

Three days later, she became his stepmother.

Women are so much better at financial planning than men.

As part of the new, open Obamanation, minutes of the cabinet meetings are beginning to be posted on the web:

Cabinet Meeting

Obama: Good morning everybody. Let’s get started. First off, I’d like to thank Joe Biden for taking on the task of implementing the stimulus bill. It’s a big job, Joe, figuring out how best to spend almost $800 billion, but I know you can do it.

Biden: Thank you, Mr. President.

Obama: By the way, those are some stylin’ gold chains you’re wearing. And unless I miss my guess, that’s a new watch. Rolex, isn’t it?

Biden: That’s right, sir. Stimulus begins at home, I always say.

Obama: Quite right, too! Hillary, I also wanted to compliment you on the fine job you did in China. You sent exactly the message that this administration wants to get across: that human rights comes in a very close third on our list of concerns, right after begging China to continue financing our debt, and halting global warming. I thought that video of you walking around the slave labor camp with a CO2 detector was a nice touch.

Clinton: Thanks, Senator.

Obama: President.

Clinton: Yes, of course. Mr. P-p-p…

Obama: That’s ok, Hillary; work up to it slowly. Rahm, anything new in our congressional strategy?

Emanuel: Just the same &%$* buncha *&@# as last week, except that %$&* Roland Burris has stepped all over his @!$% and we may need to find some other *&!% to take his place.

Obama: Put with your customary eloquence. Thanks. Say, where’s Janet Napolitano? I had some Homeland Security questions for her.

Panetta: Sorry, Mr. President, but we haven’t heard from her since her last trip back to Phoenix. We got this note, though, asking for $100,000 for her safe return. It’s supposed to be delivered to the house of a man named Hector “El Machete” Villalobos in Ciudad Juarez.

Obama: Well, you’re the CIA guy; what’s it mean?

Panetta: Gosh, sir, I really don’t know. Maybe it’s some kind of request for a travel voucher?

Obama: Yeah, that’s probably it. Joe, think you could spare a little of that stimulus cash for Janet?

Biden: Well, I don’t know…I mean what with our infrastructure needs, the ailing automobile industry, my son’s down payment on the new house… I’ll have to check.

Obama: Good man, Joe. Way to watch those pennies. No need to overdo it, though. Anything else?

Hillary: Oh, there is one thing, Mr. P-p-p…sir. Jack Murtha is waiting for you in the Oval Office. He says he’s interested in giving up his senate seat in order to pursue his lifelong ambition of being an ambassador.

Obama: To which country?

Hillary: To any country without an extradition treaty.

Obama: All right, I’ll see him. Well, that’s enough hope and change for today, folks. Say, Rahm, stop by and see the Secret Service boys, will you? Michelle and I are feeling a little stressed and we’d like to drive over to thWell, that’s enough hope and change for today, folks. Say, Rahm, stop by and see the Secret Service boys, will you? Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was
really pissed.

She told him “Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the
driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE !”

The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke
up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box
gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway.

Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, brought
the box back in the house.

She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.

Bob has been missing since Friday.

Good morning.

The market futures are pointing up, so should open upwards today, before the usual sell off starts again.

We have had about 8 sell off days in a row. Pretty much what is going on is that investors have listened to the President constantly say that this is a catastrophe from which we might not recover, and they are taking him at his word. They see that Obama has no faith in the private sector and endless faith in big government.

By the way, Obama is giving another speech tonight to tell us again how bad everything is. This guy is making Carter look like an optimist by comparison.

For anyone still keeping track, the Dow is down about 15% and the S&P down 12% since Obama took office. If a Republican was in office, the MSM would be screaming this to lead the news every hour on cable.

Skin disease named…..

A new skin disorder caused by use of games consoles has been identified by skin specialists.

The condition, dubbed PlayStation palmar hidradenitis, is described in the British Journal of Dermatology.

Researchers outline the case of a 12-year-old girl who attend a Swiss hospital with intensely painful sores on the palms of her hands.

The girl, who had been using a games console regularly, recovered fully after 10 days of abstinence

We have had about 8 sell off days in a row. Pretty much what is going on is that investors have listened to the President constantly say that this is a catastrophe from which we might not recover, and they are taking him at his word. They see that Obama has no faith in the private sector and endless faith in big government.

As I am doing promotion full time and have no design work in my architecture office, I call down the curse of the cat people on the head of the president for his cheerful optimism.

Another day, another worry…

The FBI Director is sounding a bit ominous.

It would be easy enough to pull off…..but, I do not think we will let some assholes with rifles roam around for three days. It would be “hours” at most and probably more like “minutes”. The damage would be done either way. It makes me wonder why there have been no attacks since 9/11.

If there is such an attack, I think we should pay a visit to the Swat Valley and let the locals know what happens when you have the Taliban and AQ as your friends…..

We have already learned from Barack Obama’s adjustments from his original positions on the Patriot Act , the FISA accords, the surge and overseas rendition that often the past administration faced only bad choices — which were easier to criticize as a candidate than to reject outright as president.

Last paragraph seems ambiguous:

“Under no circumstances will I disclose such information outside the Department of Defense and other government agencies directly involved in the defense planning and resource-allocation process, such as the Office of Management and Budget,” the agreement said.

Ordinarily I’d imagine OMB oversight would be routine, but does this pledge mean OMB will be in the loop or not?

./ Live munitions are removed after Canadian training exercises
./ The taliban have their hands on all kinds of bombs and use them on the people
./ The soviets regularly mined fields and left live ones behind

If you ingrates would flush out the evil in your midst so that they can be neutralized then perhaps OUR job would be much easier to provide YOU with a decent life.

This opinion piece “Pakistan’s extremist triumph” in the LA Times that refers to the Pakistani gov’t surrender to the Taliban in Swat is depressing. It’s one thing to talk about the takeover of Pakistan by extremists as a possibility, but to hear a Pakistani citizen imply that it’s almost inevitable is really scary.
