I’m not sure how much Putin’s democracy wrecking Bush noticed, Sergey. It wasn’t at the top of his priority stack, coming in well below Iraq and Afghanistan. not to mention some of the domestic matters that still had to be dealt with.

Also, what would a more confrontational approach have changed?

I recall that McCain was really big on confronting Putin over Georgia, even going so far as to get one of his interns to draft him a statement containing information culled word for word from the Wikipedia entry on the country…
