I get the feeling that that is very much where the answer lies. What we’d seen in the early days that we interpreted as incompetence now seems more like a deliberate attempt to drag things out as long as it took to get the press to give up and go home. The response to the protests was heavy-handed with an aim towards scaring the locals into dropping the matter. And Wilson was ushered into hiding because they knew if they put him back on the street so soon after the shooting, somebody would recognize him.
