The Ottomans are an interesting bunch. It’s my understanding that the empire was pretty Jewish friendly by the standards of the day. I don’t really too much about them but I do know a bit about the history of the Jews in the Russian Empire given that I did my term paper on pogroms from 1880-just before WWI.

They got better later, but they were quite brutal at times. The Martyrs of Otranto, canonized on May 12th of this year, were killed for refusing to convert to Islam.

I’m not some “Gates of Vienna” whackjob, but facts are facts and the Ottoman Empire did slightly more than its share of misdeeds.
