When I was stationed up in Alaska, they showed us how at -40 pretty much everything (including syn. oil) pretty much turned into molasses at that temp. I remember putting the oil pan, transmission pan, battery and block heaters in for my winter up there.

Friend of mine tells a story about a winter up there where the only vehicle they could get started was an air-cooled VW Beetle. Everything else was frozen solid.
