You have touched on an important tangent to the issue. In rural areas where we have less impact on each other due to distance between neighbors we see more conservative values/desires.

In urban areas we see more liberal values as in the elevator, on the train, in the next office cubicle or in your work management is that “other” person. So as a necessary social defensive adjustment, me get liberal values in the dense cities.

Voting dynamics are swinging away from rural and going more urban. So liberalism is on the rise, as per densit demographics.

I apologize I had read this in a paper and Google is letting me down. But it point well the the conservati liberal pendulum.
