If you’re a twofisted, spineless progressive (a mighty fashionable stance nowadays) Offissa Pupp, who forcefully asserts the will of socalled society, becomes a cosmic angel; while Ignatz Mouse, who forcefully defies society’s socalled will by asserting his authentic own, becomes a demon of anarchy and a fiend of chaos. But if — whisper it — you’re a 100% hidebound reactionary, the foot’s in the other shoe. Ignatz Mouse then stands forth as a hero, pluckily struggling to keep the flag of free will flying; while Offissa Pupp assumes the monstrous mien of a Goliath, satanically bullying a tiny but indomitable David. Well, let’s flip the coin — so: and lo! Offissa Pupp comes up. That makes Ignatz Mouse “tails.” Now we have a hero whose heart has gone to his head and a villain whose head has gone to his heart.

'ethics' updinged it. I hope he did so in error, because SB is right about the cognitive dissonance part. If the troll really knew about Hitler, he'd have posted on the Glen Beck thread, lambasting Beck for his bone-headed interpretation of the Holocaust. But instead he chose to stay in the Greater Wingnuttia Loon Sanctuary.

They never go back for the child's mother. They never actually address his anger and fear, which are both evident and utterly predictable to anyone with half a brain. They don't notice, as he acquires a mother substitute, and knocks her up. And they don't notice when the Sith, with absolute precision, make the only offer he's interested in hearing. Then they're suprised when all hell breaks loose. Very briefly.

Tell me, why was I supposed to be relying on these people to protect me again?

Not just the Jedi, but my friggin' childhood hero. Star Wars came out when I was five or six, and who do you think was my hero? Chewie? Han? Skywalker? No way.

It was Darth Fucking Vader, for this scene alone.

Lucas took my childhood hero, a super bad-ass, and turned him into a whiny pussy.

Note that this baiting by moradali is just the sort of behaviour that resulted in people being blocked; overt and intentionally offensive hostility and demeaning insults. Once blocked they pretend they were blocked for only disagreeing.

This particular clown, moradali, was goaded into this by the trashy tabloid hit job done my the New York Slimes. He assumed all the allegations were true, came seeking confirmation, and did not get it. Now he shows his true ignorance by posting an over the top offensive insult as he is determined to be blocked.

Such childish and dishonest behaviour.

Yep. This guy like his alterego popped out of the woodwork then, and both were clearly trying to provoke a banning. That didn't happen, so surprise, surprise, now we have one flounce and one who chose the nuke option-- "this will get be banned and I know it".
Typical.
Just like the tools who claim they were banned for 'disagreeing', and neglect to mention that their final 'disagreement' consisted of something like "I hate you daddy, you're a poopyhead and so is everyone here. PS @$#%!" -- only usually not as coherent as that.

In 1918, the cruiser USS San Diego was sunk off the south shore of the mainland of Log Guylin, or the Blessed Continent, by a German U-boat. A survivor from the Guylian village of Mineoleolea was recorded by the Smithsonian in the 1930s, and provides examples of this word’s many forms.

The sailor said that there was a fricken kaboom, an explosion, and boom, without delay, the cruiser stattada gawunda, was beginning to be failing. The sailors called to each other, “Wegunnaga wunda, wegunnaga wunda,” “As to ourselves, be alert to an unavoidable failure,” and as soon as the lifeboats had been released, boom, he looked back and the ship had lost all success at floating, ittid ganunda. “Wenunda,” he finished. “Failed.”

Yes, it is. Oddly enough it kind of reminds me of the Shrieking Harpy. I thought maybe that Jonathan Dee should watch it.

Parody. But like all good parody, it never strays far from the reality that it's mocking. I know a girl who is very nearly a drop-in replacement Kim.

There's a reason for the term "Bridezilla."

Yep. I've known an unfortunate number of women who will likewise say something like "I've wanted to be married since I was 7".

They have it all mapped out. The dress, the wedding, the ring, (all of which have to cost lots of money, of course), the house, the reception. The house, more.
Like a little Barbie Dream House setup-- all planned out and yet they don't particularly seem to care who Ken is.

In the case I'm referring to, she soaked her dad for a wedding that cost $100,000; got pissed at him that he wouldn't buy them a condo in Hawaii as a wedding present; and divorced 5 months later.

She was ramping up to turn her divorce proceedings into the next Event of the Century when daddy grew a brain and told her to knock it off, or he'd testify for her husband.

You know when Jordan got back from Iraq at 1:30am at Camp P. There were thousands of people waiting for those 5 white Buses.
And the first guy off was the commander of the 3/5 Marines.. He gave a speech that brought down the house.. He ended it saying something like 7 months ago We deployed with your Family. Woeking Women Say Their Marriage is Richer For It

Last week, a report from the Pew Research Center about what it called “the rise of wives” revived the debate. Based on a study of Census data, Pew found that in nearly a third of marriages, the wife is better educated than her husband. And though men, over all, still earn more than women, wives are now the primary breadwinner in 22 percent of couples, up from 7 percent in 1970.

While the changing economic roles of husbands and wives may take some getting used to, the shift has had a surprising effect on marital stability. Over all, the evidence shows that the shifts within marriages — men taking on more housework and women earning more outside the home — have had a positive effect, contributing to lower divorce rates and happier unions.

re: #174 RogueOne

I can't imagine having a spouse that didn't work. Having your entire identity wrapped around one relationship just seems like a recipe for disaster.

Well, I'm convinced of the need for women to have an identity beyond wife and mother, and have been for essentially forever. I read betty friedan when I was 15 or so, and The Feminine Mystique was a book more than 20 years old then-- but it did seem to still capture a lot about my mother's life, say, and the lives of many.

Still does. It hasn't generally been economically feasible for a long time now to have a partner who never works-- unless the breadwinner is bringing in a lot. It's more common in the middle and upper middle classes to have a partner who is highly educated but may take 5 or so years 'off' from full-time work to be home with the kids.

This in the article was also good:

While it’s widely believed that a woman’s financial independence increases her risk for divorce, divorce rates in the United States tell a different story: they have fallen as women have made economic gains. The rate peaked at 23 divorces per 1,000 couples in the late 1970s, but has since dropped to fewer than 17 divorces per 1,000 couples. Today, the statistics show that typically, the more economic independence and education a woman gains, the more likely she is to stay married. And in states where fewer wives have paid jobs, divorce rates tend to be higher, according to a 2009 report from the Center for American Progress.

Sociologists and economists say that financially independent women can be more selective in marrying, and they also have more negotiating power within the marriage. But it’s not just women who win. The net result tends to be a marriage that is more fair and equitable to husbands and wives.

Attitudes, as well as economic realities, have something to do with the change. Most men really do want an equal partner. Not just in economic terms, but in many ways: educational, intellectual, etc.
Freidan got a few things wrong, but imo she was always right about that.

I posted a story last week about a lawsuit in Delaware against the PD for tasering a kid standing in his driveway waiting for the school bus. Now there has been another suit filed in DE for tasering a kid who was standing on the side of the road waiting for his mom to come pick him up.

They take the opportunity to fill in the story of the first kid.

[Link: www.delawareonline.com...]

In the first case they were at the wrong address and turned a police dog loose on the kid and tasered him. He didn't hear them pull up because he was listening to his ipod.

police apparently were responding to a report of a rape but went to the wrong location. Morris did not match the description of the person police were looking for, the suit said, and when police soon realized their mistake, "their only comment to Derrick was 'Maybe next time you'll listen.'" Police then departed without an apology, according to the suit.

In the 2nd suit they tasered the kid while he was shackled because he refused a blood test.

....police threw him to the ground, "violently pushed his face into the asphalt" and put him in handcuffs and shackles. The suit alleges that because of the injuries from that encounter, Tylecki was taken to Beebe Medical Center to be treated.

While there, Tylecki alleges, he refused a police demand to provide a blood sample and the officer responded by administering several Taser shocks, despite the fact Tylecki was still in handcuffs and leg shackles.

Absolutely incredible.

Absolutely incredible.

Not at all, sad to say. I hadn't seen these; thanks for posting them.
I know I've posted here before about the teenager with a broken back who was tasered at least 19 times by the cops-- because when he was lying on the ground under the overpass he'd fallen off, having broken his back and foot, he didn't stand up when the cops asked him to.
Digby over at Hullabaloo follows tasering.

She's a pretty heavy hitter in the liberal blogosphere, but still runs it on a blogspot blog and has virtually no search function. I highly recommend adding her to your RSS feeder or whatever solely for the accounts of police issues, which I know you're interested in. She is the only person I know of in the blogosphere who regularly follows issues involving tasers. I wouldn't have known about the issue had it not been for her work 3 years or so ago.

Yes. And that still happens now.

I have a friend, really well-educated, advanced degrees, who chose to take a few years off to stay home with the kids.
Someone else we know, who chose to keep working in the same field when she had kids, and who has been really successful in a very high-powered field and also raised good kids, was a total bitch to her.
Very, very nasty comments. Like, "Do you think you're sending your girls a good message, being home and doing nothing?"
Like raising kids is 'nothing', and being home with them is 'nothing'.

It was clearly all about this person, let us call her 'B', feeling guilty that she wasn't at home with her kids. But it also made my friend feel like dirt.
Kids and work are a difficult balance, and in some ways some kinds of feminism have cheated women, because women feel like they have to do all these things and always feel guilty that they're never doing enough, no matter what path they choose.
And that impossible balance also means that women amp up the competition: attacking others' choices because we might feel like they somehow invalidate our own.
Just my perspective on it.

I think that is true in general, but I would phrase it thusly:

Many people feel threatened when a person's life choices do not conform to their own -- or are perceived as 'threats' to their own decisions, by virtue of being different from their choices.

This holds for people on the left as well as those on the right. The bottom issue here is always (for me): so why should you care what someone else does with their life?

Being a religious type, my two cents are that you can judge the deep sincerity of a person's faith by how they react to an insult to their faith. If the God i believe in is real, then why the hell would he need my help to defend his 'honor'? I've challenged friends and strangers alike in mid-furor with that question and never found anyone who could answer it sensibly (other than to say that God wouldn't need our help). So folks who react strongly (often fundamentalists of one religion or another) must be deeply insecure about some or most of their faith. otherwise, why defend a God from insult? stand back and watch out for the lightning or grow thicker skin, i always say.

Whaddya think?

I'm relatively new, so i feel ya. karma - accumulated goodwill through positive posting (or witty, funny...just not trollish or needlessly insulting)
up/down ding - the plus/minus you see to approve or disapprove of a post. you need to have posted 50 times to gain the ability to up or downding.
sarc tag - usually a backslash - your comment was meant to be sarcastic

Charles has a good definition of trolls and sock puppets somewhere here, but those terms are fairly constant across the internet.

some issues i like to discuss because they have interesting potential ramifications on societal issues - but I often fall victim to appearing that i care overly about what someone else does with their life. the though thing about discussing some of these more tender personal choices is that it's sooo difficult to keep the discussion academic, to keep the debate level enough to avoid making people feel that my dispassionate opinions on life are in any way a judgment of how they live theirs.

i've been kicked around, too - I've been really interested in Richard Lindzen's take on AGW these past 15 years (although i believe in the basic tenets of AGW and the current general scientific consensus) and have taken heat trying to ask questions about it in the past.

It`s terrible and abusers should be disciplined, then retrained or fired, depending on the nature of the incident. That being said, I hope tasers don`t become the scapegoat when addressing these incidents. I`ve treated people who were tased and perps/cops who actually were fighting...the taser can prevent injuries/grief for everyone involved if it is used in an appropriate way.

Sure.
If you were posting during the debates, feelings were running high. I believe the all-time record for downdings was a person who said she didn't like Palin.
The climate has changed here. It's an easier room than it once was for people to the left -- usually.
We've had an influx of new posters over the last 4 months or so, and I think it's fair to say that the commentariat here is, broadly speaking, more inclusive than it once was.
I was a reader of LGF for several years before I regged, and even I took a break from merely around june 2008 to dec 2008. Tempers ran too high. (in the comments)
Karma is essentially meaningless. It's a webmasters tool for controlling a forum without heavy moderation, essentially. And an excellent one. The community polices itself. In an unhealthy community you can get bad posters with high karma.

Karma works because the posters take it as 'real'-- they will forbear certain comments because they know it will lead to community disapproval, or (conversely) they start making ones that will earn community approval. So it's not a static rating of a poster's worth, no matter how high or low. It's a reflection of what the community's values are.
And it shouldn't be taken as a reflection of what CJ thinks (or does not think), because we have many posters who had very negative karma who are still here-- and ones with extremely high karma who are not. It's a tool for the community to police itself.

re: #199 iceweasel
You have touched on an important tangent to the issue. In rural areas where we have less impact on each other due to distance between neighbors we see more conservative values/desires.

In urban areas we see more liberal values as in the elevator, on the train, in the next office cubicle or in your work management is that "other" person. So as a necessary social defensive adjustment, me get liberal values in the dense cities.

Voting dynamics are swinging away from rural and going more urban. So liberalism is on the rise, as per densit demographics.

I apologize I had read this in a paper and Google is letting me down. But it point well the the conservati liberal pendulum.

re: #211 reine.de.tout

I wrote this a long time ago..but I am posting it here in sympathy

I Have a Code in My Node
============================
My sinuses are stuffy
I'm tired and out of sorts
I've been taking steamy showers
and drunk Nyquil by the quarts

There's tissues by the boxful
scattered out around the floor
and I'm praying that I'll die soon
I can't take it any more

I cough instead of sleeping
my nose is red and raw
I don't mean to be a whiner
but there oughta be a law

Or perhaps instead of prison
Make criminals this sick
they'd be too busy sneezing
for any dirty tricks

And frankly if I had to choose
"Keep your cold or get the Chair!"
I'd tell them to just strap me down
and throw the switch right there

I know that I'll get better
and my breathing will be free
I won't die from all the coughing
it's the wait that's killing me.

Bottom line: do not worry about karma. re: #199 iceweasel

I just had to log in so I could upding that.

1. As long as I'm here, Ice, let me agree that digby does good work on tasering--but she has such a huge chip on her shoulder that I find her site unpalatable. That's unfortunate because she might find areas of agreement with somebody like Radley Balko. As I posted recently, dangerously many people are deliberately ignoring their common ground as they seek out reasons to fight.

2. Sadly, I don't think the country is anywhere near a tipping point regarding abuse of police power. As the child of refugees from totalitarianism, I have no difficulty believing that what happened to Rodney King might happen to me under some circumstances, but clearly most Americans don't share my caution.

3. In fact, a minority of commenters on police-brutality posts defend the cops so vehemently that I wonder about where they're coming from.

You have touched on an important tangent to the issue. In rural areas where we have less impact on each other due to distance between neighbors we see more conservative values/desires.

No prob! But I confess I don't see how distance between neighbours = conservativism. More info on this would be great.

Yes-- this is a good thing about the karma system: it isn't anonymous, so we know who updinged or downdinged.

Frankly, I think that's excellent -- I really like being able to have a fight with someone over one issue, and they can see that I'm updinging them even though we disagree, and/or they can see that I'm updinging them minutes later on something wholly unrelated.

Good morning. From up-thread: There have been some high-profile incidents where police have improperly used tasers.

I think the bigger factor in both stories is the behavior of the police in just tasering people at random. Neither one of those people in the lawsuits had done anything wrong, one was in his own damn driveway. They didn't even try to apologize for the mistaken dog bites and taser shots. Assholes!

243 jaunte  Sun, Jan 24, 2010 7:43:07am

re: #238 Rightwingconspirator

This was an interesting specific example of the effect at work:

Residents of an apartment building living near a stairway, for example, tend to have more friends from other floors than others. The propinquity effect is usually explained by the mere exposure effect, which holds that the more exposure a stimulus gets, the more likeable it becomes.[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

I suppose that people in rural areas have more of a tendency to cluster in like-minded groups, which would reinforce their points of view, without any easy access to alternatives.

Aside from human stupidity, some brutal lessons have been learned the hard way about improper use of a taser. A man recently splashed gasoline all over a house. FYI, the 50 comment requirement for dinging has been dropped, I think. The icons at top right in a comment are as follows, rightmost first:

! - Report button. It's rarely used, but it's a way for anyone to send a notification to Charles, calling attention (or a recommendation) to a particular comment.

Heart - Clicking that for a comment marks it as a "favorite" for your own personal purposes. At top left, there is a My Favorites tool which you can click for reviewing and managing the set of comments that you have so marked. This tool is for your own use and other posters see nothing of it --only their own info.

+ (plus) - Click to give +1 point of karma for a comment.

- (minus) - Click to give -1 point for a comment you disapprove of. (Most of us use this sparingly.)

Karma# - Click to see who dinged a comment up or down.

(You can undo and even reverse a ding. Can't ding your own comment.)

Football/avatar - Click for some info about a user.

Hope this helps.

Excellent post. My own personal philosophy regarding karma (as if anyone should care) is this: LGF is a bipartisan, anti-idiotarian blog, so:
Give out positive karma liberally: freely, with no thought of tomorrow.
Give out neg karma like a conservative: prudently, rarely, judiciously, with forethought.

And when it comes to your own karma, act like both parties w/r/t to the bottom line: never look at it at all or ask where it's come from or where it's going.

I`ve treated people who were tased and perps/cops who actually were fighting...the taser can prevent injuries/grief for everyone involved if it is used in an appropriate way.

Part of the problems with ´police stems from a simple attitude of "more policemen means better police protection", a formula that even Clinton did not hesitate to apply in increasing funding to hire more police officers.

Problem is, at some point we reach a point of diminishing returns, and needless to say, one bad, abusive, corrupt cop can undo the work of a dozen good, just and honest ones.

Problem is, you can never seem to find (or have) enough good cops on duty, and at some point, even they will get overworked, overstressed and make mistakes that are hard to tell apart from actual premeditated abuse.

And add to this the problem with any police force is that is a heirarchical structure, like the military (or the Vatican) which makes it heisant to have its dirty laundry aired in public.

And face it, we are used to those cop show that portray the perpetrator doing the dirty deed and then cynically exploiting all the rights and priveleges afforeded to him by your criminal justice system to avoid prosecution.

Those cases do exist, but we must remember that we are not watching "24", this is real life.

i've never asked, but i'm assuming that sock puppet = parroting viewpoints as opposed to engaged discussion.

i've been kicked around, too - I've been really interested in Richard Lindzen's take on AGW these past 15 years (although i believe in the basic tenets of AGW and the current general scientific consensus) and have taken heat trying to ask questions about it in the past.

my two cents - learn through observation. and if someone is taking your post the wrong way, keep your cool and stay polite.

clarity of word is paramount, though. there's a good chance that if people took your post the wrong way, you didn't write it very well.

Sockpuppet means this. That isn't an LGF usage but an interwebs wide usage. It's a member of a community who has several different 'names' or accounts.
People like this use their 'other' identities to cause trouble-- either to say horrible things, or to agree with themselves, or to pick fights, whatever.

LGF did have a problem with sockpuppets. Even now, various folk who were banned (for cause--they earned it) will try to 'sneak' back in with a new name and say nasty things.

This doesn't happen any more, nearly as much, but it did happen a lot at one point. It is still common practice here for some posters to accuse a new poster of being a 'sockpuppet', -- but it is also true that for a while LGF had many banned posters compulsively reregistering solely to talk crap.
So, don't take it too personally if you are new and someone accuses you of that.
Best to ignore such accusations and move on. IMO.

maybe, but the jets do two things that usually work well in the postseason:

1. play defense
2. run the ball and control the clock.

Number 2 neutralizes the effect of having a rookie QB ... keeps him out of "third and long."

terrific song and alot of people covered it...no where near as good as his tho which is unusual..for example people do Dylan far better than he does, and Little Feat covers are legenadry, especially when they do the Grateful Dead or the Band..whoa...listen to Little Feats's cover of the Band's 'Rag Momma Rag'...just outa sight!

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Haiti relief efforts continue even as the media starts focusing on the routine news cycle once again. It's also nice to see that Fidel Castro has weighed in on the Haiti quake. He's busy complaining about the US efforts and that there are all those US soldiers providing humanitarian relief.

Nice to see that the addled socialist dictator emeritus is busy foaming at the mouth about the US relief efforts (along with Chavez and Morales). They just can't stand that the US is doing humanitarian relief while the socialists are focused on bellyaching.

Hmm.

I just finished a little translation that might interest some here.

It's a succinct two-page guide on how to destroy the life of an artist whom the former East German communists didn't like. Brought to you by the Stasi. (This is not a form or standard protocol, but something that was tailor-made for this individual.)

Enjoy!

1. Measures to prevent and contain enemy political-ideological effectiveness:

a. Guided from operation area:

- e.g. engage suitable journalist for defamation (distorted statements etc. in press and other mass media)
- create conflicts with publishers
- disturbance of communications system (fictional connections, border and customs checks, etc.)
- prevention of entry [to foreign countries]

b. in the GDR

- support contracts so that contract law measures can be initiated (withdrawal of license, etc.)
- manuscript thefts and destruction of technological aids
i. destruction of tape recorders etc. or making them unusable by interfering in ways that cannot be immediately detected
ii. expose films, erase tapes

2. Measures to break up and destabilize friendship and follower circle and his own personality

- fictional advertisements
- introduce disinformation to create contradictions
- cast suspicion on individuals (can also be used against him personally)
- disruption of communications system

i. frequent changes of telephone number
ii. disruption of telephone connection (e.g. when important meetings are being planned)

- arrests (create conditions that could lead to criminal acts) e.g. drunk driving
- organize appearance of “contradictors” at meetings
- constant ideological conflict (in doses, so he begins to doubt himself)
- targeted drafting into the military

3. Measures to create psychological stress

- destruction of his personal self-image through negative influence on his living circumstances, e.g.
i. induce him to abuse alcohol
ii. induce him to engage in sexual debauchery (underage girls)

- destroy existing love relationships
- dishonest medical advice
- damage personal property

i. car
ii. weekend house
iii. boat etc.

- interrupt specific benefits

i. stop royalty checks on legal grounds
ii. terminate garage lease

Sounds a lot like the stuff Nixon plotted against his enemies, come to think of it...

RCTV in Venezuela quit broadcasting today.

A cable-television channel critical of President Hugo Chavez was yanked from the air early Sunday for defying new government regulations requiring it to televise some of the socialist leader's speeches.

Venezuelan cable and satellite TV providers stopped transmitting Radio Caracas Television, an anti-Chavez channel known as RCTV, after it did not broadcast Chavez's speech Saturday to a rally of political supporters.

"They must comply with the law, and they cannot have a single channel that violates Venezuelan laws as part of their programming," Diosdado Cabello, director of Venezuela's state-run telecommunications agency, said Saturday.

The telecommunications agency "doesn't have any authority to give the cable service providers this order," RCTV said in a statement. "The government is inappropriately pressuring them to make decisions beyond their responsibilities."

RCTV switched to cable in 2007 after the government refused to renew its license for regular airwaves. Chavez accused the station of plotting against him and supporting a failed 2002 coup.

Under the new rules, two dozen local cable channels, including RCTV, must carry government programming when officials deem it necessary, just as channels on the open airwaves already do. Chavez regularly uses that legal power to force the country's broadcast TV and radio stations to carry his marathon speeches, which can last up to seven hours.

The changes, decried by the opposition, journalism groups and viewers, come as Chavez is confronting domestic problems — including a recession, soaring inflation and electricity shortages. Though he remains Venezuela's most popular politician, Chavez has slipped in the polls and is campaigning against an emboldened opposition to keep control of the National Assembly in September elections.

In Caracas neighborhoods, Chavez opponents leaned out apartment windows early Sunday to bang on pots and pans. Others shouted epithets and drivers joined in, honking car horns.

"They want to silence RCTV's voice," said Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the channel's most popular talk show host. "But they won't be able to because RCTV is embedded in the hearts of all Venezuelans."

As with any piece of pop-culture, people will read into it what they want. Avatar, a visually brilliant and yet shallow action film (Duh!), seems to have riled up certain political partisans.

I've said, and still maintain, that if the movie "300" were released under this current admin., the usual suspects would denounce it as pro-gay, pro-abortion, Hollywood propaganda.

I'm still surprised that they didn't, except that it was about clobbering people whose descendents would become Muslims.

Yesterday I received my February edition of the Texas Home School Coalition Review, which has an ad from [Link: www.apologia.com,...] advertising a "creation-based science curriculum" for homeschoolers. Looking over the apologia.com site, I see they have a weekly science problem of the week.
This week they spin the question as a problem for evolutionary science.

Please note that you are allowed to do research to find the answer to this question, but you CANNOT post the question in a public forum in order to get the answer.

This is the TWELFTH AND FINAL problem that goes towards this prize.

Scientists recently discovered tracks that appear to have all the hallmarks of being made by a tetrapod. They claim that the tracks are roughly 395 million years old, but that presents a problem for the hypothesis of evolution.

Question:
What problem does this discovery present for the hypothesis of evolution?
This question will be replaced on or about January 25th

re: #186 iceweasel

My own experience has been that I spend more time than I would have expected explaining that I have to work, or else we will be homeless. People still say things to me like "Well, when the baby comes, you'll want to stay home for at least a few years..." and when I say that's not going to be feasible, they smile kindly at me as though of course, I've been brainwashed to say that.

Israel's prime minister declared on Sunday that his country would retain parts of the West Bank forever — a statement that infuriated Palestinians and could complicate the year-old peace mission of a visiting U.S. envoy.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu laid claim to disputed territory just hours after meeting with George Mitchell, the Obama administration's Middle East envoy. Mitchell has been shuttling between Israeli and Palestinian leaders since late last week in hopes of breaking a deadlock over construction in Israeli settlements.

"Our message is clear: We are planting here, we will stay here, we will build here, this place will be an inseparable part of the state of Israel for eternity," Netanyahu proclaimed at a tree-planting ceremony celebrating the Jewish arbor day at a settlement just south of Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Authority over the weekend expressed concern over Hamas's growing attempts to gain recognition from the international community and warned EU representatives against engaging in dialogue with the extreme Islamist movement.

A senior PA official in Ramallah condemned initiatives by some EU citizens and officials to talk to Hamas, accusing them of "ignoring the fact that Hamas had staged a coup in the Gaza Strip."

The official warned that meetings between Hamas and Westerners was "playing into the hands" of the movement and undermining efforts to achieve reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah.

"Those who are trying to legitimize Hamas are harming the Palestinian Authority and any chance of achieving peace with Israel," he said.

Hamas officials, meanwhile, said that their group accepts the two-state solution but only as a temporary one.

The neat lines and red rectangular sketches look like any typical architectural design. But the handwritten initials H.H. - belonging to the infamous Nazi SS chief Heinrich Himmler - indicate what the drawings represent: wooden barracks, gas chambers and crematoria.

Just ahead of the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Israel's Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem is displaying the blueprints of the notorious camp in Nazi-occupied Poland that has become a symbol of the Nazi genocide of European Jewry. It is the first time the plans will be on display for a wide audience.

The Right Man Is Getting Harder to Find ...

[Link: online.wsj.com...]

I sat next to a very successful, attractive gal at work a few years ago. One day we were talking about relationships in NYC and she said, "it's a guy's world out there" meaning that you can take your picks when you walk in to a place.

I found that crazy, being a product of the 80's and 90's as far as dating (and it was quite the opposite).

Anyway, I am not one of those who are threatened by successful women. Hell, quite the opposite. It means they are apt to be more independent, less leachy, can take care of themselves and their finances. I am looking for a mate not a daughter, and that's a foundation for me. So I find it very hard to believe that there are men who ARE afraid of women like that.

The new year is a time for frank introspection and earnest resolutions, and US President Barack Obama engaged in exactly that during an interview with Time magazine at the start of the second year of his presidency.

In doing so, he showed considerable candor as he acknowledged having made mistakes and missteps in his Middle East policy during the last year even as he recommitted himself to the peace process.

But then again, internal reflection is one thing and public confession quite another. Sharing as Obama did raises questions about whether he's learned the right lessons.

For starters, detractors have long labeled Obama as naïve and hubristic; in the Time interview, he seems to echo their assessment.

He told Joe Klein that the political realities confronting Palestinian and Israeli leaders made it harder than expected for them to come to the negotiating table. "I think that we overestimated our ability to persuade them to [negotiate] when their politics ran contrary to that," he said, adding later that, "If we had anticipated some of these political problems on both sides earlier, we might not have raised expectations as high."

It's as though legions of Middle East experts, Arab and Israeli officials and large chunks of the American Jewish community hadn't told the administration exactly that, repeatedly. Acknowledging not having comprehended that reality smacks of, indeed, naivete; proceeding in the face of such advice suggests, well, hubris.

Jets, Saints, Colts, Vikings
Colts, Jets, Saints, Vikings
Jets, Colts, Saints, Vikings
Saints, Colts, Jets, Vikings
Colts, Saints, Jets, Vikings

Those are the standings in which I hope the season ends. Any order with the Vikings last. Yeah. Because of Michelle Bachmann, Jesse Ventura and Al Franken.

That state elects nutjobs and I want the people there miserable.

Oh, and I hope it's real cold there.

And idiots bought it.

Meh, I wouldn't go that far. I think most people are well aware of the fact that presidential candidates are overly optimistic. When I heard all the stuff about "unclenched fists" I believed that he felt that was true in a perfect world. But I never thought he would follow through on the same idealistic level as his rhetoric.

I think every president's goal should be to promote peace. I like that had the "hubris" to try a different (his own) way of promoting it. I especially like that he recognizes that he was wrong.

When a man tells you who he is, believe him.

heh. I thought you had left out the "L" as in Kludgement. As in "Epic Kludges"

I laughed.

Seriously, didn't you roll your eyes a little when he would talk about bringing about peace in the Middle East? C'mon, didn't you?

More of a resigned sigh.

I wish I would have stocked up on the Urban Decay now sold out set of eye shadows with a tie in to Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland. Retail $51, Ebay $135.
Not sure about the difference with Chanel. If they are bidding on the European product, that has a slightly different scent formulation then the American product. If I remember right, more alcohol is added to the American market's products.

PF, If you got to Urban Decay's website & search for it, they have an email that they'll send you, when they get more. If anyone's going to get more, they will!

Hooaah there… is McSame in for the run of his political career…?

Has a teabag supporter… JD Hayworth laid the challenge gauntlet down on a proverbial war hero Senator?

It could be either fun, funny or funnier, in Arizona this fall.

Then it's cool.

Like you need my approval. But, you know what I mean.

Time for football. See you all later. Stay safe.

Clearly they are going to get more. If you search Ebay with
"alice in wonderland urban decay"
and look at the lowest priced one, someone is selling the list of what store is going to get more, when. There's over 100 for sale, and clearly Ebayers think there's money to be made.

452 prairiefire  Sun, Jan 24, 2010 12:07:10pm

There is money to be made if you sniff out the deals. I enjoy being a seller on Ebay.

The difference between Obama and Bush as that I hoped that Obama would be smart enough to learn from his mistakes or at least admit that he made them.

McCain made me nervous in that his decision making process seemed to point toward taking gambles big enough that there wouldn't be a chance to readjust if they didn't pay off.

Palin and his decision to stop his campaign to fix the economic crisis are examples of that.

It can get tedious, though. But, yes, the money can be great.

456 Mr. Crankypants  Sun, Jan 24, 2010 12:20:06pm

I'm really hoping that Obama is humble and intelligent enough to learn from his mistakes.

We've sold on Ebay, mostly during the summer where we find stuff at garage sales and resell it.

TARP had been totally consummated when Obama took office.

I had real concerns concerning McCain’s cognizance? Liebermann had to verbally amend or cloak some of his public statements during their middle eastern tour prior to the election.

So, so, much fun. Costume jewelry with marks is really hot right now. I don't know enough about it to invest. Ebay is a great research tool, also. You can click on "completed auctions" to see what is selling and for how much.

Floral~The playroom is now the shipping room. I promised my kids I would get it cleaned up to give it back to them.
