The NYT article I linked to has me thinking. Iranians are saying (at least publically) that they feel confident the Iranians are going to regroup and retake their territory easily with a little help. Iran can’t afford another failed state on its borders and I don;t think they’re going to let it happen. I think it’s also very important for Iran to have some serious favors owed by Iraq. With the nuclear negotiations coming to a head soon Iran can be well positioned to weather any sanctions and can drive a much better deal at the bargaining table.Obama might actually let Iraq fail but I don’t think Iran will.

I’m actually thinking a combined US/Iranian operation would be great for relations with Iran. Note, this does not include US boots on the ground.
