I wonder if in 1776 in England, the attack by the insurgents led by George Washington on Christmas day was viewed as some kind of “terrorism”.

It was not admired or appreciated. Armies in those times formed winter camp (Think Valley Forge, hopefully without all the misery) and didn’t come out until spring. Washington’s sneak attack was unheard of, unethical, immoral, and just not done!
