I’m not sure. I think McCain could have won, absent that event, had he picked a better VP nom and been a bit more aggressive.

Ways McCain could have won (all of these together *might* have helped him win):
1. Lieberman/Romney/Pawlenty/Crist as VP instead of Palin
2. Running on a campaign of bipartisanship and change.(i.e abandoning the GOP base, but doing it honestly)
3. Hillary as his opponent.
4. A strong stand against continuing the Iraqi occupation.

Instead, McCain sucked up to Bush, pretended everything was peachy (“The fundamentals of the economy are strong” ring a bell? This was said while hundreds of thousands of people were losing their jobs every month and foreclosures were on the rise)

oh, and 5. Not “suspending” his campaign when he was forced to admit the fundamentals of the economy weren’t strong in some lame effort to make it look like he actually DID put “Country First”…even Republicans I know were like, “What the fuck? Is he for real?”
