It is based on a novel by some Viennese guy in the 30’s, IIRC, and I think that goes some way towards explaining how terribly un-shocking it is.

While the idea of unfaithful spouses and kinky sex is not shocking to today’s audience, I agree, what I find more interesting about the movie are the little details he went into in order to portray the “social” class as something truly repugnant at their heart… almost sort of the ultimate sin. That is, other people are only there for our most temporal and carnal pleasure.
