Beer will keep without pasteurization. Depends on the hop content, is it filtered, does it still contain live yeast, etc. It can also retain its quality. In fact beer can improve with age.
Russian beer was designed to turn sour after 2-3 days to discourage people from hoarding.
When I lived in Moscow, they still had the beer tap kiosks, bring your own container. I would see guys showing up with a 3-liter pickle jar under each arm and getting them filled up: a Moscow 12-pack, I guess.
