re: #234 Sol Berdinowitz

There is another argument that gets floated after every mass murder, namely that if someone had been there with a gun, they could’ve prevented it.

Guns are not a magic talisman. If you want to use one to defend yourself in your home, then that is your choice, but unless you are highly trained and experienced, have nerves of steel and an incredibly sound sense of judgement, pulling one in public to stop a shooter is not necessarily going to help, in fact it could easily make things worse.

They’re not as easy to use in real life as they are in video games I can tell you that much from personal experience. I haven’t fired much in my life but when I have, it’s been in a completely relaxed setting, and one where obviously someone couldn’t easily point a gun on me and shoot me. And I agree, another gun man could make things worse. I think people who bring up that hypothetical mean well enough but they’re ignoring the reality of a situation like that. That kind of situation could end up badly not just for the other unarmed people but also the shooter as well and then we’d have people upset that a potential hero was shot by police.
