I did feel that way in the past, but literally all of my gay friends feel differently.

One of them put it this way:

“Maybe we should have a new word, to indicate that this is a new thing, free of bigotry, open to whatever religious meaning the individual, not tradition, wants to put on top of it.”

For a new time, a new word. It’s not a terrible argument.
