to play the devils advocate? No one had a problem with people walking around for years with the Irish-American or Italian-American shirts and everything else. When I was in Boston I saw a huge convention hall that was Italian-American meeting hall of some kind. My brothers wife’s family always maintained they were Italians first, Americans second although they had all been born here.

That’s too bad about your brothers wife’s family. My dad is of 100% Italian heritage, but proudly considers himself first and foremost, American. There’s nothing wrong with being proud of, and knowledgeable about, one’s heritage, but America comes first in my book. If it doesn’t, we become a house divided against itself.
