My kids go to a very decent public grade school. It is a smaller neighborhood school. However my wife is adamant about being 100% involved in their lessons and home work. The school only goes to 5th grade and then they must go to middle school. I am not thrilled with that. But public school is absolutely a mixed bag. Some are very good and some are little more than prisons. I know plenty people who have pulled their kids out of Catholic school so you never really can tell. I believe the most important thing is parental involvement.
