He is not an idiot. He knew what he was saying then and he has no reason to recant now. The only transgression was perpetrated by the government. Ali was a bona fide CO and not a dodger as some would make it out today.

He did not run away to Canada as the cowards did at the time. He said this was not his war and he was unwilling to fight it. He accepted the consequences.
