Fatah is thinking “The enemy of my Enemy is my friend.” They want to use the US and Israel to eliminate their rivals. I’m willing to oblige, but I recommend that we charge a price for the service. A peace treaty with Israel seems to me a fair price.

51 lostlakehiker  Mon, Feb 2, 2009 8:06:56pm

Flag burning shouldn’t be thought of as a kind of sacrilege. Flags are symbols of nations, and many nations merit great respect. But they’re not sacred. Holy Mother Russia? And how many god-emperors have there been?

Political movements to ban flag-burning in the U.S. have always struck me as misguided. One of the very most important reasons why it is unethical for an American to burn a U.S. flag is that he contradicts himself in the very act of burning it. He relies, with utter confidence, on a scrupulous adherence by the law to the widest possible interpretation of the rights noted in the Constitution as being god-given. He relies, with near equal confidence, on the public tradition of tolerating all sorts of outrageous provocation, so long as it’s not an infringement of the rights of others. And then he calls his nation oppressive. Chutzpah.

Those who burn the flags of decent nations merely let slip the mask that they would have hiding their essential wrongheadedness or worse.

Posted on the other thread…..I walk through little Somalia on my way from the light rail station to school. A left wing bar there has Palestinian flags and anti-Israel posters on it. A fellow Lizardette and I infiltrated an anti-Israeli performance there a while back. It was actually all white left wingers (maybe the booze kept away hard core Islamasts).

It is interesting how the far right and far left have common bonds. Maybe it’s just co-incidence, but a very large Lutheran church is lead by a St Paul Democrat. They are incredibly obsessed with Israel (in a bad way).

And that’s not even the whole of the islamic presence in Minnesota. One of the first areas the Muslim Student Association moved to was the University of Minnesota decades ago.

And remember the airport issues, and the Target clerks- this isn’t a surprise to me. The bleeding heart liberals who would vote for a moron like Al Franken are the same people who think this multi-cultural nihilism is great!

Exactly. Not a surprise at all. There’s a BP gas station on Larpentuer about 10 blocks from the capital that has Islamists refusing service to Jews. No shit.

I went to the Stand With Israel rally at the Jewish Community center in St Louis Park a couple of weeks ago. Crazy Al was there. I am happy that he showed up (my take is he is Jewish only in heritage). But he was the only political type, Republican or Democrat, that used it to make political statements. He said things will be better in the mideast now the Bush is gone and Obama is in office.

Norm Coleman, and even Mark Dayton, gave very good talks. Michelle Bachmann did the best. And yes, Israel haters were outside in force. So were the police.

re: #91 Occasional Reader

I recall reading about some weirdly racist remarks Clay/Ali made over the years.

Indeed he did make some heinous remarks. His interview in Playboy back in the mid-seventies contains a few. Unfortunately, it isn’t available on line, so no direct link, but here is some of it:

Under the influence of Elijah Mohammad — who preached that blacks should refuse to integrate with “white devils” — Ali made a point of dating only black women and lashed out at men and women who engaged in interracial sex. In an interview with Playboy, he declared: “A black man should be killed if he’s messing with a white woman.” When the interviewer asked about black women crossing the colour barrier, Ali responded: “Then she dies. Kill her, too.”

It’s unlikely that a white athlete who made such remarks would receive the praise that Michael Mann heaps on Ali. He says that the fighter “personified racial pride and self-knowledge”. The Playboy journalist, who interviewed the boxer, was closer to the mark when he observed of his subject: “You’re beginning to sound like a carbon copy of a white racist.” … The transformation of Ali from a great fighter to a celebrated man of conscience and social purpose has succeeded so well because the actual history of his career has been altered to reflect the kinder, gentler man of today. Unpleasant remarks or facts from the past have been swept away or excused. … A more historically accurate appraisal of Ali would conclude that he was far from heroic outside the ring and was pitifully misused by his masters in the Nation of Islam. For his purposes, Elijah hijacked the impressionable young man’s career and filled his head with racist nonsense.

By the time he finally broke free of the old Nation of Islam, in the 1970s, his career was in its last stages. He continued to fight long past his prime, in part to recover the money and time he had lost in his misadventures with the Black Muslims.

How about: anyone caught actually burning a flag in a demonstration gets photoed and fingerprinted. Same with anyone caught with any sign or material in their posession which contains advocacy for terrorism, extermination of Jews, or even love of dictators past or present. Anyone caught screaming “death to Israel” or “Death to America” or any of the provably violence-inciting Arabic phrases which are commonly screamed, they get fingerprinted and photographed, too. “These people,” people who exhibit these behaviors, should definitely be considered, Officially, dangerous.

This way we’re not profiling based on a religion, but upon behavior.

But no. We can’t even do that. We must watch it when we say “these people”, since we can’t even quantify or codify who we mean by “these people”, not even with careful consideration of sets and subsets of behavior and overlapping patterns — naming any group, no matter how well-defined, is de facto prohibited, is racist, is a “broad brush”, by the new conventional wisdom, ironically a suicidal foolishness.

Columbia University’s endowment shrinks

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York’s Columbia University said its endowment took a big hit in late 2008, and that the Ivy League university should prepare for leaner times.

In a note addressed to the university’s community, Columbia’s President, Lee Bollinger, said the endowment shrank by about 15 percent in the six months through the end of 2008.

“Given the volatility of capital markets, one cannot accurately project what will unfold in the spring,” Bollinger said.

In December, Yale University said its endowment had lost 25 percent, or $5.5 billion, in four months. Harvard University said its endowment had lost 22 percent and that it would likely post its worst returns in 40 years.

I have no way of reading the mind of Ali, but I did live through the period. It was always my take that his conversion had a whole lot more to do with the injustice he felt with serving in Vietnam vs. black representation in America. “No Vietcong ever called me n*gger.”

Hard to argue with that. Sacrificed the best years of his like over that one. Greatest of all time he was.

I’m of two minds here. One the one hand, I am appalled by the anti-Israel (meaning anti-Jewish) demonstrations in our country. On the other hand, I think they should be ignored - because the demonstrators want to be seen - news coverage brings legitimacy to their cause. Maybe some other lizards can help me with this terrible dilemma.

re: #164 Taqiyyotomist

There’s this little, old thing called the First Amendment.

The Vietcong demonstrated that they were capable of astounding evil and cruelty - including “racially” (or, if you prefer, ethnically) motivated cruelty. Have these insects (including Islamist Ellison) been told, that Franken had a Jewish upbringing?

Franken was born in New York City, the son of Phoebe G. Kunst, a homemaker and real estate agent, and Joseph P. Franken, a printing salesman.[12][13] Franken had a Jewish upbringing[14] and grew up in St. Louis Park, a suburb near Minneapolis. He is a cousin of MSNBC’s Bob Franken,[15] and his older brother, Owen Franken, is a photojournalist. Franken attended St. Louis Park High School until the tenth grade. He graduated in 1969 from The Blake School, where he was on the wrestling team. He attended Harvard College and graduated cum laude in 1973 with a bachelor of arts degree in political science.[16] At Harvard, Franken washed dishes as a participant in the work-study program with Richard Honaker, who was nominated by U.S. President George W. Bush in 2007 as one of three U.S. District Judges from Wyoming.[17]

He did not run away to Canada as the cowards did at the time. He said this was not his war and he was unwilling to fight it. He accepted the consequences.

Don’t get me started with the *church* and its stance on Jews/anti-semitism. In fact, “we aint seen nothin yet”, imo. But I will not go so far as to lump tens of thousands of people with that broad brush. In fact, I think there was somewhat of a split over this very issue with the Lutherans, though that may have been the Episcopalians. There are some in every group, be it Jews, Christians, Buddhists, etc who will side with the anti-semites, but not ALL.

I vacuumed Maisey’s cage today with the shop vac (she has a five foot hight cage). I always take her OUT of the cage first, and put her on top, or else she will try to fight with the vacuum hose, which in the case of a small 5 gallon shop vac, would be equivalent to sucking a parrot with about 20 psi.

Then you have to hit the hose against something to shake her out.

Rotary Club a ‘threat’ to Islam

INDONESIAN Islamic hardliners have called for a ban on international organisations the Rotary Club and the Lions Club, saying they are part of a Zionist conspiracy, reports said today.

The People’s Ulema Forum (FUU) said the clubs were “infidel” fronts for Freemasonry and the world Zionist movement and threatened Islam in the world’s most populous Muslim country.

“They gather funds and give them to America and the Israeli Zionists,” FUU chairman Atian Ali Mohammad Da’i was quoted as saying in The Jakarta Globe daily.

“We urge all Muslims to renounce membership in the Rotary Club and the Lions Club. Otherwise they can consider themselves infidels.”

He called on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to ban the groups.

It doesn’t matter. Dismissing them as stupid is like saying “don’t worry, they aren’t worth listening to.”

And they go right on doing what they do, while we turn our back, because they are just stupid, nothing to see here… move on…

No, we have to start recognizing all these people as dangerous, well funded and on target.

Well put. The LLL would label anyone who doesn’t agree with them as “stupid” and act as if they don’t matter. That’s a BIG mistake. Hopefully no fellow lizards would be that foolish. Whether they’re stupid or not, it doesn’t matter. They exist. They think this way. They will act accordingly.

Oh, and one other thing: We see the Israeli flag and the US flag burned regularly. Why? Because they know they can. But we know better. We’ll tolerate burning the flag. It’s just a symbol. We can always make more. But we also take note of who these people are. If they’re ever so foolish as to do something awful, they’d better be looking over their shoulders. We have developed the technology to shrink this world to a global village. And there aren’t many places where they can hide.

Flying Pig moment at the NYT?

Iraq’s Victory, Iran’s Loss

IRAQ’S peaceful elections and strong voter turnout last weekend were a major success for both that country and the United States — not that there was much celebration in American news coverage.

The elections could also redefine Iran’s role in the region. Critics of the Iraq war claimed that overthrowing Saddam Hussein in 2003 strengthened Iran’s position. Had we left Mr. Hussein in power, the theory goes, Iran would be less of a global threat. This argument is fundamentally wrong.

Long before the American ouster of Mr. Hussein, Iran was supporting terrorist groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza and the West Bank. It was seeking hegemony in Syria and Lebanon, and was well along in its clandestine program to acquire nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. After Mr. Hussein’s conviction and execution, Iran increased efforts to advance its radical brand of Shiite Islam in Iraq. But the success of the election should substantially retard those efforts.

Mr. Hussein defended his repressive regime — and his pursuit of weapons of mass destruction — in the name of protecting Arab nations from Iran. Western critics of Mr. Hussein’s removal are basically parroting the arguments of a tyrant. Surely some other Iraqi government could have advanced the Arab cause without invading Kuwait, or using chemical weapons against its own citizens.

Iraq’s provincial elections actually weaken Tehran’s hand.

These leftists think Americans have no right to defend themselves. Our enemies have a legitimate grievance in their eyes, and how dare we think or behave otherwise! Multicultural nihilistic liberalism- it’s running amuck in Minnesota, and it’s heading your way soon.

318 Walter L. Newton  Mon, Feb 2, 2009 9:15:50pm

re: #317 pink freud

Well of course I do!

My post…

For 2009, I recommend that both men and women who are looking for that “special one,” to raise their expectations. I know I am.

Don’t hope, but KNOW that your partner will be sexy and good looking. I don’t mean good looking like GQ or sexy like Maxim, because those “models” rarely exist in everyday life. Know that you will find something special about your partner, which looks good to you and something that no one else has. And sexy is what you make your partner feel like in intimate situations. If looking sexy is your only gauge to sexuality, then you really don’t have an emotional connection to your lover. Looking sexy and being sexy is like night and day.

Don’t hope, but KNOW your partner will be loving. Loving what you both have, not what you both want. What you see in the first few moments of a new relationship is usually what you will be getting for the long term. If adjustments need to be made, in a honest relationship, most of the time they will happen on their own.

Don’t hope, but KNOW your partner will be perfect. Perfect for you, not for your family or friends, not for some preconceived Hollywood fiction or not for some “Penthouse Forum” entry. Don’t bring these outside influences with you on a date or into your personal space, they will only get in the way of your heart.

Don’t hope, but KNOW that your relationship will be like a romance novel and then laugh with each other when that doesn’t happen. There is a difference between being serious and taking each other too seriously.

I don’t think these needs have changed much since I was born in 1952, but I do believe that we have lost sight of what really matters. I feel many men and women have let themselves be taken hostage by shallow ideas, valueless expectations and useless advice.

Of course, this is only my opinion. It’s the way I approach dating and relationships but you will have to decide for yourself if it has any meaning for you.

Send me an email if you are interested in talking. I am 56, very single and not ready pack it in yet. I work in the arts, I’m an old-soul, bohemian, life lover and love giver.

Hey esch! Listen - you said “The problem is the out-of-control welfare and immigration, and the extremist left U culture.” and while I confess to not knowing much - actual nothing at all about Minn. welfare situation, what is the immigration problem you’re alluding to?
Cause I mean NO OFFENSE to any Minn Lizards when I say that I think Minn. may be the 3rd or 4th most liberal state in the nation (behind California New York and perhaps Wisconsin, although the fact that Minn has elected Keith Ellison and probably Al Franken would - in my mind - put it waaaay ahead of Wisconsin - and frankly California and NY have enormous illegal immigration problems.
Thus the fact that this “demonstration happened there doesn’t surprise me more than to hear it happened in Berkley or Manhattan.

What country, state?

335 esch  Mon, Feb 2, 2009 9:28:51pm

Conservatives need to give up ‘playing nice’. We know better than the ignorant, idiotic socialists. History and reason are on our side.

It’s OUR FAULT things have gotten to the way they are. “All that is required for evil to flourish…” is entirely apt, because we have done practically NOTHING to prevent it. Well. Rush and a couple of others have done quite a bit. But it doesn’t mean much without most conservatives willing to stand up and actually fight as well, unpopularity and scorn be damned.

Socialism, ‘economic and social justice’, all forms of cultural suicide need to be dragged out kicking and screaming into the light of scorn and ridicule and exposed for what they are. Over and over again, by all conservatives.

Many of the ‘refugee’ groups the U.S. has taken on in the last 50 years have had a sizable portion of the imported population end up here for the absurdly overgenerous welfare benefits. We have whole large sections of the two cities devoted to the different imported groups. Especially the Hmong and Somalis. Not to say there aren’t grateful honest hardworking members of all of those groups, but the statistics of gang violence, drugs, multi-generational welfare enrollment speak for themselves.

Wonder what would happen if a bunch of folks had a demonstration, the centerpiece of which was the burning of the Hamas flag? Think the MSM would cover it?
And then, of course, we follow up by writing letters to the editors of all papers and TV stations that carry any negative commentary when they didn’t carry any negative commentary on topic of this thread.

Well, for starters…
CAIR would demand an investigation into a hate crime, Obama would call for restraint on all sides, college campuses would hold Hamas solidarity vigils, Hamas exploding talking heads would make both the lecture and late-night television circuts, and leaders of the demonstration would be hauled before a Congressional committee on charges of inciting violence and Islamophobia.

No, I find liberals make good partners as long as they can keep the disagreements civil. And I had a very liberal girlfriend (ok, anarchist) and it work out fine, for a couple of years. We did not break up because of her being a liberal, it was because I found out she was a racist (Hispanics).

Well I wish I lived in Minn then cause that’s what I’d do. Mofo’s can’t censure me on grounds of speech - unlike Canada we do have Freedom of Speech here -and we are protected by it under the First Amendmet from the Feds and the States and they would NOT want me testifying in front of any congressional panels.
Cause I’d tell the truth and screw them if they didn’t like it. And I’d tell them to screw off, too. In public and hopefully on Camera.
Maybe wake some American’s up with a lesson in American History while I’m at it.

They always target the universities, not just in Minnesota.

I’m still wondering about the grammatical-correctness of “who forsook whom.”
Is that right?

“Who forsook whom?” is correct. But here’s one to separate the true grammar mavens from the poseurs:

“The whole controversy depends on [who/whom] was forsaken by [who/whom] the worst, and has nothing to do with [who/whom] the aforementioned forsaking was done by first.”

re: #368 ploome hineni

Main Entry: big·ot
Pronunciation: ˈbi-gət
Function: noun
Etymology: French, hypocrite, bigot
Date: 1660

Ecch, it left out the best part (albeit a controversial part) of the etymology! Namely, that the French bigot is frequently explained as being based on a froggified pronunciation of the English phrase “by God.”

In fact, this is likely one of those too-good-to-be-true etymologies, but its popularity has endured — possibly because it reminds people of a different French slang term, les goddams — a disparaging term for English speakers whose etymology is self-evident and not a matter of any dispute. Similarly, les sommebiches, again in reference to English speakers, apparently had a brief vogue in 20th-century French slang.

The problem with the “bigot is from ‘by God’” theory is that there’s no evidence of the French ever applying the word specifically to people from the general vicinity of the British Isles.

376 TruGrit  Tue, Feb 3, 2009 7:43:08am

Wow! Very enlightening. I wonder why we don’t hear more about this from the MSM? Of course, they may not recognize what is happening.

As a side note, it’s interesting to see how easy it is to drown out moderate voices. All you have to do is yell loud enough. Of course, just because you’re the loudest doesn’t make you right.

How can you can tell this to people naive enough to elect weak Hussein Obama just because he is cool?. How can you counteract media whores power if they don’t show this?. People lured by these leftist lobbies won’t realize until the critical mass for the reaction is reached, the same way it happened when hitler started up his socialist machine at full throttle.
