re: #256 sagehen

Isn’t that how Chris Kyle was killed? With his own weapon, by a friend he was letting use it?

Sort of. He allowed someone to to use it as part of an pretense at therapy for a guy who had PTSD _and_ schizophrenia. He went into a psychotic break with reality on the drive to the range and killed both of the other guys who didn’t take his issues seriously enough.

But in the end, that is your choice. Only at the range however and for the duration of the visit.

One example for why I would allow that is person A owns an expensive old shotgun. Say a Parker or a Fox. The stocks on those tended to be more extremely cut than on modern shotguns. Before dropping $5k or more on it, person B will probably want to see if that stock is usable for them. Thus go to a range together, shoot a round of clays. Then they can do the sale and background check (presumably on a smartphone app) and make the official transfer of the firearm. There is just an example.
