A Democrat as speaker of a Republican house? Am I missing something?

The very big mistake the Democrats did was to not do more when they had control. They were idiots to think they could negotiate with Tea Partiers, even though the latter hadn’t been elected yet, but the writing was on the wall.

I’m proposing a moderate house for the remainder of the term. Mainstream (if there are more than a few dozen) Republicans should caucus with the Democrats (for the good of the country) and reject the Tea Party and its religious right extremist and isolationist platform. If they were to do that, the Tea Party would be flushed out in the next election, and yes, they’d have to wait another cycle or two to regain a majority - but four to six years of economic prosperity while the Republicans work their way back to a sizeable portion of the House wouldn’t be the worst thing for us.
